I read that it is rare that sebae's get older than 5 years. Am curious as to how old your sebaes are? I just got one yesterday and hope mine will be healthy and live long.. (so far it's white/bleached, got to get it brown and healthy..)

I had one for over 14 years. It just died recently(a combination of unfortunate circumstances). As far as I could tell, it was one of the oldest in captivity.
Of course you have to realize that the technology and knowledge to be able to keep an anemone long term is only about 12 years old.

There are several people on this list that have sebaes that are well on their way to surpassing that.

An old pic of mine.

Phil, very sorry to hear about the loss of the anemone. Any pointers we anemone keepers could use to prevent a similar fate for some of our old timer anemones.

Don't have the anemone in your classroom where the air conditioner breaks down for the two weeks before school starts during 100 degree temps. Then don't change to a one part calcium/alkalinity supplement a month later without constantly testing your levels.

Consistancy is the key. Even if conditions are not perfect, it is better that they are consistant. This anemone lived its whole life under 4- 30 watt NO fluorescents in a 40 gal. tank with an undersized Sander venturi skimmer in a 10 gal sump. I only rarely made any water changes. For a long time I didn't even use R/O water for make up water, just de-chlorinated tap. Not exactly ideal by todays standards, but the system was very stable.

I lost this anemone the same way most people loose long time residents. It was a combination of a situation I couldn't control (power outages, faulty equipment, etc) and stupidity brought on by over-confidence and wanting to make things a little easier.

Again, sorry about the loss. I know that would be tough to lose an animal after having it for such a long time. And, I appreciate the information regarding the importance of consistency in conditions. At least it had many good years of aquarium survival--something few anemones purchased some 12 odd years ago have had.

I've had my sebae just over 5 yrs now(my avatar) as well as my LTA.
I've heard conflicting info on lifespan, some saying 50-100 yrs in the wild, and I've heard some say maybe indefinitely.
Seems there is still alot to learn about them.
I'm praying mine last a long, long time.

thanks for your comments! Phender, I am also very sorry to learn about the loss of yours. Davocean, your sebae looks awesome. Can I ask how much you guys feed it? I intend to nurture mine with mysis shrimp every second day for now, since it's new and still white...

I feed mine a silverside a week, and they pick up some mysis about 3 times a week.
Purple tips get a bit brighter after feeding.
