how long should i leave 400w halides on?

my 2 hamilton 400w mh pendants r coming in tommorow.. 14k de bulbs.. hqi ballasts..

my tank is a 120g thats 24 inches high, running open top with no canopy.. and im gonna hang the pendants so the fixture will be about 12 inches from the water surface..

once i start putting corals and clams in there, how long should my photoperiod be so that everything throughout the tank is saturated?
i will be using halides only, no vho actinics or anything..

I would lower the lights down to 9" and run then for 8hrs.

6-8/day IMO w/ 400's 6 is enuf.
