How many and when is it too many!

I just started a 120 g mixed reef. It has been going for about two months. I can see myself having more than this one tank. My question is how many tanks do you have in your house? How many would you have?

I think my wife will kill me after the second!!!!!

Budget and time. I would wait at least one year and if your current tank is doing great then i would ponder the question.

I would get one very large tank--slightly bigger than what you think you can handle. Why get several smaller tanks when you can one very large one? That said, a 120g is a nice size tank!

consider the fact that at some point you may want to have a frag tank. Thats #2. If you ever really get into angels or triggers, you will want a fowler, thats #3 (potentially a very large #3). I would take it slow.

I am not even talking about the qt which is a tank in itself

We have seven, yes, seven systems running...I guess it's a passion..or maybe, an addiction! Luckily, the wife is as big an addict as I am.

I agree with this one. That is why I am upgrading to a large tank, and trying to get it right with this one. I can take it slow, and not feel like I am ready to upgrade after a year. Of course this will have a frag tank and qt tank in the fish room too.

My question is how many tanks do you have in your house? How many would you have?

I have seven running right now (5 saltwater, 2 freshwater for the kids.)
I want to cut it down to four once my 150 gal is running (2 saltwater, 2 freshwater for the kids.)

Several of the tanks are quarantine tanks, one rock curing tank, one cycling tank and one observation tank. In the end I will have the 150 and my 30 gal cube in my bedroom. That's more than enough to keep me busy.

Right now I have a 29g reef and 55g goldfish and many smaller empty tanks sitting around. My house is too small to house anymore tanks full tanks.

So far my plan is to upgrade my 29g reef (or my attempt at a reef) to my 55g. Already have the 55g but have goldfish in it that will go in an outdoor pond in the summer. Then one day when we move to a bigger house the plan is to upgrade from a 55g to something like a 90-125g for a reef. The wife really wants a shark and a humu trigger. So we were thinking of getting a 200-400g non reef tank for those types of fish. I'd also like to maintain a goldfish pond in the backyard. So that's sort of 3 "tanks".

We'll see what really happens of course. I know I will do the reef at least but we have lots of other toys we want so I'll have to see where fish fit on that list. Of course if money, time and the wife allowed I'd love to have 4-8 tanks of various stuff but I don't think any of those parts will allow me that. I will probably want to setup some sort of multiple housing quarantine system so who knows what that would involve.

Let me clarify. I have the 120g reef. The qt. and a 75g fresh water chiclid. In the basement I have set up a fish room with the intention of someday sending the plumbing through the floor. I think I may be addicted. My buddy let slip the cost of my 6 bulb t5 fixture. Oops. I do know it is a slow process. My second tank will be the fish only tank. Down the road.

I've been migrating through the aquarium types and currently have 4 tanks running and working on a 5th.... after the 5th is setup I'll be down to 3 tanks. I have a 125 long Cichlid, 175g acrylic corner Cichlid, my 58g Reef, and a 40B with all the Pond goldfish in it for the winter. I'm looking to move all my Cichlids into the 210 peninsula that I'm setting up, use the 125 as a sump for the 210, and get rid of the 175 corner since the seams are showing micro cracks. After that I plan on "re-homing" the cichlids and switch the 210 over to FOWLR once I collect enough pieces to get it going.

I have the 75 cichlid tank. I like it but can't wait to switch it to a fish only salt. I will also increase it to another 120 or 90.

Let's see... too many...

- 150g, mixed reef with an assortment of reef safe/reef safe with caution fish, a Linkia, and a giant coral banded shrimp named Leviathin.
- 65g, soft coral tank with fish, invertebrates, and a fromia (this is my favorite tank, can't remember if it has been running 3 years? 4 years?).
- 20g macro algae, soft corals, LPS tank with a serpent star, snails, hermit crabs and a blue coral banded shrimp. That is it because the micro fauna in that tank is soooo fun to watch!!!
-50g freshwater Axolotl tank (compared to the other tanks, this one is soooooo easy to take care of)
- Bowl with Axolotl eggs. Does that have to count :)?
- 40g that had a crash a few months back and I am going to tear down today. Someday will be replaced with the 57g rimless in storage that will be a SPS and invertebrate tank with no fish.

We have had 8 tanks running..... now that was way, way too much to take care of for us. I finally had enough and tore down 3. The list above is pushing it.... 4 saltwater, 1 freshwater, and raising baby axolotls is our absolute max of what we can reasonably take care of. 3 saltwater would be better.......... also wish the Axolotls hadn't laid eggs.

I like to keep it at one. The second tank is an open invitation for the third, and so on. Multi-tank syndrome can quickly overwhelm a household.

240 reef with 75 sump. A 75 reef with 30 sump and 10 refugium. 40 breeder for quarantine/water changes. 10 gallon for housing beta and live black worms, plus a 110 fresh water. Electric bill for fish only is 100/month. Who reminded me of this anyway?

one 75 with a 14 gl. reff, enough for now "dream" a 180 but that's in the future it turns into an addiction really fast, love it.

1x300g mixed reef
4x freshwater - 40g, 14g, 3g, 6g
Do ponds count? 1x2300g koi pond along with 2x300g and 1x150g tubs for koi/misc
There are a few other aquariums in storage - my wife is a huge fish/coral addict; shoes/purses would have been cheaper lol

Well I'm 18 years old.. And currently live at home.. Not a total loser.. Going to my community college until I decided what I want to do with my life.

but about a year ago I got permission from my parents to do a saltwater tank...

They thought it would be just one tank...

3 months later...

ATO tank, Sump tank, Display tank, QT tank, 34 gallon rubbermaid containers...

My mom goes... "Son you have 5 tanks... You asked for 1..."

And then ''You still don't have any fish"

I can say I've learned two things from saltwater fish keeping...

#1. Woman do not like aquariums

#2. Patience.
