How many clownfish

well there are no hard fast rules as it really depends on what else you have in your tank, how good is your filtration capacity and so on.

Clowns are pretty territorial, and once paired tend to fight any other clowns pretty badly...I have seen a few people successfully keep two pairs or a pair and a individual successfully in a 6 ft tank, but personally would not try more than one pair.

Ditto gsago. I wanted to possibly do a false perc and skunk in my 5 foot 120 and was advised against it. If you want multiple pairs, run multiple tanks ;)

at a lfs here they have a tank of true percs theres like 15 of them in a 180 and in another 300g they have 2 picassos and 2 black clowns.i asked them do they every cross paths with the 2 mated pairs he says rarely but they never fight he said.

Stick with one pair per tank. Having more then one pair might work in the short term, but all bets are off when one pair starts to spawn. My pink skunk pair became very very aggressive once they started spawning -- had more issues from them then from my existing dwarf angel when I added another dwarf angel. It had gotten so bad that I had to sell them off, they indirectly killed my Golden dwarf.

This is my fear of getting a pair is once they spawn they are gonna go on a rampage..

I was really shocked at how bad the pink skunks got, I had thought my Clarkii pair were bad, but they were wimps compared to the skunks.

So for my Perc pair is pretty mellow -- only share their tank with a Potter's dwarf, but they have only been spawning for about 9 months now, so that could all change.

Well right now I just have a school of chromis (5) just hoping once i get 2 they dont go attacking the buggers.. :(

I put 2 pairs in a 220gal and it last about 5 min till it was all out war had to remove one pair..... I was say keep one pair per tank or school the same kind

I have learned the hard way, most LFS will tell you what U want to hear NOT what U should hear:furious:. Its a hard lesson to learn. BUT... I keep them separate in my tanks and I have only had them a short time. Good Luck

Wow! I guess I'm just lucky. I have 2 pairs in my 180. A Pink Skunk mated pair and a True Perc mated pair. Both pairs lay eggs and both pairs started out in my 72 Bow 2 years ago. They stay at opposite ends of the tank and never cross the line into each others territory. My Pinks are hosted by my RBTA's and my Percs are hosted by a large mushroom rock. I would not try a maroon pair and a tomato pair, but I have no issues at all.

obviously what everyone has said here is true.. Two pairs is usually one to many..

However, it can be done. Many people have had multiple clowns in one tank.. and of course the bigger the tank the better.. If you had a 1000g tank you could certainly add 1 if not two more pairs.

From my experience.. If you add two pairs to a large tank.. add them at the same time.. also try set up their territores on opposite sides of the tank
