How many gph do I need for my 75 gallon sps reef tank I know I need at least 400 gph through my refugium but not sure about in the tank

I have 1 EcoTech Vortech MP40 and 1 Tunze Nano wavebox in each of my 75G tanks.

They are a match made in heaven. ;)

My 75 was very successful with a closed loop pushing 2400gph, the pump was a reeflo super dart through an oceans motions super squirt compact.

I'm new to this so not sure about what you mean by budget but I want powerheads plus the return from my refugium

budget? what can u afford? theres many ways of creating flow . on a 75g i would use at least two 1350 koralias n a nice return pump if u get into all sps i would do four with a wave maker or get an mp40 but agian they are 450 so how much are u illing to spend is what hes asking

You want strong random flow. How many GPH that requires will vary greatly. It depends on rockwork, pump placement, pump size and type, coral placement, and coral size. It will also change as your tank matures. Flow also plays a big role in nutrient export. You want to minimize dead spots in the aquarium allowing the food you add to be eaten or removed. So as said above forget GPH.

Do you want to spend 1000 USD or 200 USD or somewhere in between.

Bare minnnimum you are looking at $100 minnnimum for the return and 30-60 minnnimum for internal flow (2x 800gph sunsun power heads for 15 ea, cheapest on the market). You could always make a Carlson surge device and have the best possible internal flow for $30-50.

I was wondering if there was a way to detect dead spots in your tank or do you just observe where detritus collects?

2 mp 40 would be great, but if you are on a budget, jbj oceanstream pumps are great. Marine depot $135 for 2 1500 gph wave pumps. I would also supplement with one other powerhead somewhere in the tank.
