The common thought is 1# per gallon.

If it were me, I would add 300#'s of pure live rock and 200#'s of dry rock. Your LR will seed the dry rock and soon you will have 500#'s/

Also Urbor, I believe that it depends on where you plan to keep the LR...I mean, if you will have a fish room or a big sump to place some LR then yes by all means get 500 lbs but if all your LR will be going in your display tank then you have to decide what type of aquascape you plan to have. YOu can go with open swimming space and the "less is more" type of rockwork to give your fish plenty of swimming space and corals room to grow or you can add lots of well positioned LR to offer plenty of hiding spots for your fish and lots of real estate for corals to be placed. Decisions, decisions huh? Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Base Rock or Dry Rock

I'm setting up a 360 I'm using about 200lbs of base rock and plan on seeding it with live rock. It does take a little longer, but I have more time than money. I found a local reefer that had some dead "live rock" that he had just collected over the years and I bought it all from him. I personally would only use dead “live rock” that has been cured properly. I think it makes a better base rock than the denser lime rock.

You can also do the same with sand. There is no need in buying 700lbs of live sand. IMO I plan on buying 50lbs or so of live sand and mixing it with my dead sand bed.

I'm getting a 500 gal going also and ended up buying 300-400# of marco rock to add to the 200# live rock I already have. Kinda worried is going to be way too much...

bulkreefsupply.com is another site that sells good dry-rock. I just received 300 lbs for my 300 gallon tank and I'm very satisfied with the quality. I'm going to add 1 piece of LR to seed the rest... the amount I saved by doing this is well worth waiting several months for the dryrock to be seeded.
