how many powerheads?

How many powerheads are recommended in a 55 gallon mixed reef? I currently have one maxi-jet 600 with an eco mod and a maxi-jet 400 regular. They are both on the back wall. The 600 is facing more toward the surface and the 400 is facing the 6.

How should they be placed in the aquarium for maximum flow?

I am trying to increase the flow to help with algae problems.

2 maxijet 1200 will work better for your 55.
What are you planning to have in the tank? fish and coral wise?

I use 2 maxijet 1200s in my 29 gallon

You may need 3 or 4 maxis in a 55. You could mod your maxis to ge more flow. You could also upgrade to more highpowered PHs

Maxijets alone are good utility powerheads, but not great for flow in a tank as it is direct undispersed flow. The mods for these seem to be good at dispersing the flow to a much broader stream.

I would think a couple MJ 1200s with prop mods would rock a 55.
