How Many Reefers quarantine their Fish?

Fenner and Calfo are my main people I watch for :) Neale Monks is also good.

Just skimmed those links, everyone is having problems....:eek2:

I briefly read. One guy was dosing too much. You'll have problems dosing too much copper too :)

did you see this one ?

I have a 300g Saltwater DT (FO) that I have been treating with Cupramine for Marine Ich.
I have maintained the Cu at 0.5-0.7ppm for 2 months and still notice some Crypt on a few fish. I moved these fish to a separate 25g QT and treated with Crypto Pro... 5 days and the Ich is GONE!

Chloroquine Phosphate is my/the current "genie in a bottle" here... But should be administered in "bare" hospital settings- Bob Fenner 3-10-10

I think I will go ahead and try the Cholorquine Phosphate when I need to and then I'll post my results with exactly how I did it and with photos :) That's how information is passed on.

medicating a 300g tank will always be difficult.

and if the guy is saying that the crypt is gone in 5 days, how is he so sure? the fish might not have white spots showing externally, but could still have crypt in the gills.

who knows, the guys could be working for Crypto Pro.

If it works so well, there would be more than 1 person on this forum to attest to it.

Didn't see that one ;)

I also said Curpamine was best "IMO". But hey if it aint broke don't fix it.

Lets put it this way, this isn't the first time we disagree and it won't be the last.... GO BEARS!!!! :D Born and raised in Chicago.

Not arguing, but many (or most) public aquariums use chloroquine for crypt treatments. I think most hobbyists don't because it's more difficult to get, and a lot simply don't know about it. I would personally use chloroquine, but both are legitimate treatment options, and most people are going to use what works best for them.

Not to mention the only fish place I have a link for on the net is $125/Kilo which I think treats 100,000g of water, if I remember correctly from doing the math a while ago.

i dont qt any of my fish. i only buy from reputable places like liveaquaria where i know they qt all of their fishes.
I'm a giant fan of LA. They try, but for many reasons, do not and can not properly QT all of their fish. They do QT all DD fish.

So you would quarantine a fish even if it was from DD?

Yes. Anyone can make a mistake, especially when time is a factor.

I've Qt'd everything for years. Just by co-incidence; I haven't seen any parasite in any of my DTs in that time either. I think this is like the old line " A conservative is a liberal who hasn't been mugged yet". Non-QTers are QTers who haven't experienced a catastrophe yet. I have never read anything by anyone who would consider an expert (Sprung, Fenner, Goemans, etc.) who does not strongly recommend QTing everything. Parasites can arrive by coral, snail, mandarin, wet nets, anything exposed to water that contains/contained other fish. I'm surprised this is still even an issue.

I tried to QT all my fish. Even my leopard wrasse. I have one in my 55 gallon QT / Hospital tank right now. It's been running for 6 months, no live rock. I use my display tank water to do water changes for it. The ONLY thing is that I don't do my QT properly on EVERYTHING. Which means I don't QT my corals and inverts. I rinse them a few times with my tank water and try to clean them as much as I could.

I have no problem QTing fish for 4-6 weeks but I have no success in QTing sps corals pass 3 weeks in my nano sps QT tank. Too bad I couldn't get the sps QT going or else I could have a disease free tank.

I've been a reef keeper for about 18 years and I never QT'd anything until the past year of 2 and it has made a huge difference. I don't lose fish anymore, they seem healthier and it makes me avoid impulse purchases because I know I will have to wait 4 weeks to put it in my display

OK all...
I lost the Mandarin and now my clown has it, I am so desgusted with this!

If I loose these last three fish which are my Algea Blenny and Flame angel.... Not sure what i'll do!

I want to setup a QT but my DT is in the wall under a staircase with no access from the front and the back is painted black not to mention all the rock and sps corals I have which will make it impossible to catch these last three fish....

JUST VERY DISGUSTED right now!!!!

Your true problem could be flukes, with opportuntistic things jumping aboard. I recently had my entire tank brought down (fish population wise) by what I believe was flukes. By the time I figured that out, however, a few fish had already died and treatment wasn't enough to save the others. It was a pretty horrible death, too. I ran my tank fishless for months because the prospect of bringing in another fish with flukes was so unpleasant. I had had most of my fish for years, and they were about two months into their new tank after a move, and I purchased a new fish that was eating and appeared healthy. I put that fish in my display after only a week, and within three days things turned very very bad.
I am sorry to hear about your fish losses; I know how much it sucks.

I QT every fish i add, regardless, always... better safe, than sorry... learned the hardway, a couple times...

jmo, nothing more...
