How many water changes do you do?

I am just trying to get an Idea of how often and how much you guys change out the water.. One person I talked to said every couple weeks and others say every week. So what do you guys do and what size tanks you have?

some people change water every week, every couple weeks and some people once a month, depends on ur equipment and bioload ect.

i have 180 gallons total and i change about 30 gallons,im not to consistant with it but sometimes every weekend some times every other.

yeah, it depends alot on the size tank (total gal), bioload, feeding.
i change 50gal in my 200gal+ every 3wks. 4wks max. I feed my reef tank often and heavy throughout the day. I do this cause i like to keep my fish and corals happy. This also keeps my tank disease free

Twice a Week

Twice a Week

In my 14G Cube below, I do two small changes twice a week of one gallon per change. It comes out to about 15% per week. I've read that smaller, more frequent water changes are better than just a single change once a week or twice a week. Of course, that's open for debate but it takes all of three minutes for me to do a 1G change and that's what I've done for 13 months and my tank is very healthy so I'm sticking with it.

I do about 50 gallons a week on my 300, at least try too I feel it always looks best when I keep up on my wc

I have a 14 gal bio cube w a lot of rock. I'd guess my actual water volum is about 8 gallons w all media, rock and everything else that's not water. The biocube 14. Really only holds about 101/2 gallons empty, as I tried it while being empty And this is wwhat fit.
I have a mixed reef and low bioload. My fish are a trima goby, cincta goby, and a yasha hase rainfordi pistol shrimp. As well as a Pom Pom crab and hermits and snails. I have no skimmer no sump, which I did on my 50 breeder I recently took down. So beside the chemo pure elite and filter floss, water changes are the only other export after the live rocks denitrifying bacteria. I do two water changes a week of one gallon and some time I do one of the weekly changes with 2. All looks well in my tank and I know it may be overkill but it works for me. No algea, nitrates, phosphates or lack of essential trace elements. IMO in a nano it's a lot easier to change water often them mess w complexity of the system by adding gadgets or messing w dosing.

Thanks for the imput. I am trying to figure out budget wise what this is going to run. I would like to do a reef tank with few small fish. Buying gear off of cl will help and I can wait for the right deal. The mixing sw cost is starting to worry me though.

The water changes are probably the least expensive thing about this hobby. If you have an aquarium and you are worried about $10/month in salt, then you might want to repurpose the tank as a FW tank until you determine if you are really into looking realistically at budgeting the kind of money running a reef tank entails.

Just don't want to see you scrimping and saving to have a tank that is doomed from the get go. You don't have to buy all Vortech or get a calcium reactor right off the bat, but be prepared for a lot more expensive operating costs than just the salt mix.

BTW - I do a 10% weekly water change on my 75G.

I do 3g a week on a 28g Nano. In actuality, it's about 23g in water so it works out to about 13% weekly. I use Reef Crystals. Seems to work well and keeps my CA at 440-460 consistently with a few LPS and Clams.

I have a 120 mixed, with a nice load of fish. I do a 20 gallon change every two weeks. I run two tlf 150 media reactors, one with 2 cups gfo and one with 1 cup of carbon. The gfo gets changed once a month or so and the carbon I change with the water.

I see your point. I just don't see to often what the outlaying cost on average tank. I am sure that there are some in my boat enjoying a salt tank. If any of you have ever gotten into astronomy you know what I am talking about.

Don't let it deter you :) Just be prepared for some sticker shock when you want to start keeping hard corals. If you are running fish only then it's not that much more expensive than FW. Good luck!

Really depends on your tank. Look at your water readings. If 10% a month keeps your water readings in check then your golden. Anymore then 25% a month means you may have a problem.

Water changes can add stress to your system if done wrong.

Thanks, there is more than one way to get there. Prob look for a shallow tank on cl and start a spread sheet cost up keep. :deadhorse: don't want beat this too much. So far its given me a good idea of how much you guys are changing water out. This way I can figure out how much sw is going run roughly. :)
