how much flow for a 29

woogy

I currently only have a mj600 for flow...i have a fowlr tank now...i am eventually going to upgrade lighting and flow...i was thinking of using 2 koralia 2 (600gph each)...that would equal 41x turnover flow...too much???...not enough???

What do you plan on keeping in it?

In my 29 I HAD 3 MJ 900s (( plus the return )), tank is mainly SPS. I am messing with the flow right now, put an anemone in there. Right now I just have 2 Koralia 1s in there, still seeing what I want to do.

Put that seems like it might work, just have to see how your corals respond to it.

I have two MJ 900s in two 29g systems. That's enough for the soft corals and anemones that I keep. I have a MJ kit that I'm going to try for grins, though.

The one thing that I don't like about the MJs in that size tank is the flow is so direct. When I had them in my 29, had to "bounce" the flow off the glass. Over all I like those powerheads, just need to make sure you don't blast any corals with them. Mine would push my anemone around too much.

do u think i should decease to 2 koralia 1's?

I've only been using my K 1s for a couple of days now. I am actually thinking of adding a 3rd. But, going to wait a bit.

In my 29, I have one Koralia1, plus my return. That gives me about 716 gph as it is now.

The tank is stocked with 2 colonies of zoas, 2 colonies of button polyps, 1 ric rock, 1 gsp, 1 candy cane, 1 torch, 1 pearl bubble coral and an open brain. Brain not looking so good..well, looks OK and I see his feeders come out, but it's not really opening up and "laying" on the sandbed...kind of cupped shaped.

Anyway, I was thinking of adding one more Koralia1, but was afraid of a sandstorm. Any ideas from anyone, or maybe go with a koralia nano in addition to my existing koralia1 and return?

I would not GO with #2 with the 29 gallon. MB 2 #2's on one side with one low and one mid facing the center glass and 1 # 3 or 4 i would go 4 on other side mid range facing center front glass. Dont under estimate flow. Like i said amount of LR and LS and rock placement help. With proper flow the LR will convert ammonia and nitrate into harmaless nitrogen and the SB will convert nitrate into nitrogen. But if flow is low they will only collect nitrates and ammonia and no longer serve as a bio filter.

I like to use the feeding method. Whene you feed add alittle extra and whatch how it flow around the whl tank. You want to see it stay in motion and suspended but if you see areas where it collects or seems to drop then you have low flow.

If you have rock that is packed and get no flow then no amount of flow will help.If you have little rock and low stock with rock placed lose and unconfined then the lower flow will work.

You need to adjust the flow to your paticular setup.A pic would really help.

Hey Lance...thank you. I was not thinking of adding a #2. I was thinking on adding another #1, or a koralia nano.

As requested, here is the best pic I have...minus some of the corals mentioned, but it shows the direction of my return flow and koralia1.

Thank you again.

As you can see, I'm in a battle with some hair algae. My nitrates are getting under control, slowly but surely...so I think I'm winning the battle! LOL!

This was why I was wondering if I needed to add more flow.

dileggi, with either the MJ900s, or the K1s, I haven't had any sandstorms.

Here is is a picture from right before I added the K1s.

Great tank Todd. Do you mind if I ask..how deep is your sandbed?

And to confirm, you think I should add the extra koralia1?

I see red algea with bubbles in it. More flow will reduce and or eliminate that. You could add a better powerhead on the other side but it would tank longer. Clean the one you have to improve flow and add 1 # 2 below it as far back as possible facing the middle front glass.Same as the other. Then add a #3 or 4 on the other side for cross flow.
I like to use a powerhead with duckbill tip for dirrection control and a flow control know for flow control.Give a newbie much better control and are great for water changes. You add clear tube and drain and fill with it.http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produ...e+matchallpartial&Ntk=All&N=2004&Ntt=rio&Np=1

Thanks Eric. On average it is just under 2 inches.

yea, I think you should add an extra one.

Gotcha. The power head has been cleaned, several times actually..LOL! That's when the algae was really bad. It's much much better now, but still not gone.

I just want to make sure I have this right. I'm going to add a koralia2 to the same side as the koralia1, but lower and further back. The flow will blow to the middle front glass.

Then, I'll add a koralia3 or 4 to the other side of the tank, in the same position as the #2 that I'm adding?

For whatever reason, I didn't know I could go as high as 3 or 4's in my tank!

I really appreciate your help!

Thank you both - Lance and Todd. I was afraid of adding more flow thinking that I was going overboard. I'm still in that newbie stage and have a habit of micro managing the tank. Sometimes good and sometimes not.

I really appreciate both of your help.

I can't speak for the 3, but I don't think you should add a 4 to your 29, just think it would be way to big and really stand out. I have a 4 in my 75 and while it isn't too big, it isn't hidden either.

You can see it on the right hand side (( top )) this is in a 4 foot tank.

Another great tank, Todd! I can only hope...

Sounds good though, I'll see just how big the 2 and 3 are. I know it's pretty easy to see my 1 in the biocube.

I have a custom 5g that has a nano and I just didn't think that would do much in the 29.

I'm presently in the process of trying to "win" my wife over with converting my 75 cichlid into a reef. I really liked the cichlid's until I discovered this addiction!

If I win that conversion right and start a build on my 75g, would you mind if I had any questions at that point?

Again, thank you very much.
