How much sand do I need

How much sand will I need for a 125? Also has anyone on here used sandblasting sand? Its $3.50 for 50 pounds. I know a guy thats been using it in his fresh water tanks for years, and it looks good. By changing to sand from bare will this change my water quality, any spikes? I have always had sand bottoms and when I moved 4 months ago I changed to bare bottom and from a 72 to a 125. I think I like the sand better, any help would be great. Thanks Mike

I have a 40 lb bag of sand never opened( thought I would need more but didn't) I would sell to ya for $30 or tade for a frag if u have any. I have the same exact sand in my 135 and love it, just bought to much. I live in Granger which is only like 15 minutes away from either Ankeny or Des Moines. Let my know if u are interested!

Btw the sand is argonite sand.

I would use aragonite sand about an inch deep (unless you are going with a dsb).

I've heard some people use chicken feed(crushed oyster shells).

I used silica sand (sandblasting sand) in my tank and never had any issues with it.

mabe check youe silicates, also if you add non live sand to a established bare bottom reef tank you will have to let it cycle. Reef sand also helps buffer the PH and alkalinity. Good luck! In my oppinion bare bottoms are always more desireable than covered!!!

I agree that the base sand will go though a cycle. Ive never found it easier to control my nitrates than w/ BB.
