I have a problem with brown algae (dirt) on top of my crushed coral. I have about 3-4 inches of crushed coral on top of about half an inch of sand. Is this too much?
1. get rid of the crushed coral, it will always grow brown algae and other junk. do small sections at a time though to avoid any problems.
2. a well rinsed dry sand will work just fine.
The only problem I can see is that your sb is pretty deep so depending on how long this tank has been set up it may take a couple weeks to get it all out. You don't want to disturb any gases that have built up in the substrate. On the RC homepage there is a sand bed calculator.
