My bad... Make that a sedra 3500 rated at 350 gal. per hour

Well, a good rule of thumb is to add up all the equipment you have in your sump (skimmer, reactors, etc..) and match gph. Anything more and your just passing water thru the sump without any processing. Leave the turnover to Closed loops, powerheads, Tunzes and such.

As far as efficiency goes with the skimmer, if you can direct feed it with over flow water, it doesn't get much better than that.
