How much would you pay for efflo?

When you said someone bought it.. i knew it had to of been Steve Weast!! Sure enough it was! Steve W has the best tank with the top best corals! He will definitely take care of that beauty for you. Steve, please post pics!! Thats going to look so nice in your tank! i can just see it!

Anthony, which of your top corals are you selling next? ;)

sschafer - that piece has been in captivity for almost 13 months..it started out brown like anyother ones from the wild..and if you remember..the prices on efflo back then was very very high..

Inv.- damn..i gave it away..hehehe next?? maybe my yellow tort with bright purple polp colony?? j/k

Well... I was hoping for anonomity.... but, I guess the cat's out of the bag. Here's my take on the things discussed here:

The Cost... Like everything in our economy... it's supply and demand... and I consider this a supply of 1. You don't come across a coral of this quality very often... or maybe, even ever again. I personally would rather have this one coral than three regular corals from any of the etailers out there.... so, in my mind, it is fairly priced.... especially since I have been seeking quality rather than value in my new system... and, this piece fits in my philosophy.

The Real Cost... As Anthony has stated, this piece has been a favorite of his for a long time. It has done extremely well in his system and I'm sure that he still holds an affinity for it... I will feel terrible if something happens to this piece much more so than if it originated from Reefermadness or the LFS. It is for this reason, more so than dollars, that made its purchase a tough decision.

The Risk.... We all know that a coral's performance in one tank means nothing when it is moved to another tank. Even though Anthony's water parameters, lighting scheme, and circulation are similar to mine... there's no guarantee that the coral's stellar performance will continue. It could easily react negatively to any number of factors... but, that's what this hobby is.... RISK.

I only hope that the efflo does as well in my tank as it has in Anthony's.... for both my and Anthony's sake.

Steve,
While I'm sure that this beauty will thrice in your tank. The best way to reduce the risk is you spread some frags around to other tank, in case a tank crash should ever occur. I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. :D

Let me be the first to offer to help keep the linage of this gorgeous safe by offering my tank as a frag sanctuary. I know, it's an extremely generous offer but one I'm willing to do for your peace of mind.

Just me me know when you want to send it so I can make some room.

Hey Guys,

Your forgetting it's Anthony.... If Steve called him after 9 in the morning, Anthony would have been on the sauce. And once he starts drinking, you never know what will happen.... He probably traded Anthony the coral for 600 shiny magic beans.

Anthony, I got all those empty beer bottles to trade you for those Red rics :)

Talk to you soon Skinny,

Dave B

I can't visit Anthony now, because the only reason I go to see him is to see this coral....good thing he has those other 2 efflo's to shift my attention to.

Congratulations Steve, i'm sure you'll take good care of it.

I'm glad that coral went to Steve, he will not be disapointed with it. I personally think, although pricey, it was well worth it. Rock on! Be happy!

I was only kidding about chopping it out. I know how few and far between large, rare colonies are.

If I did spend $500 for a coral, I would have to have some way to eventually recoup some costs to justify it. I'm not saying it's not worth that. It's worth whatever someone wants to pay for it.

After all, I think a lot of SPS hobbyists are more collectors than marine environment enthusiasts.

Congrats Steve! We will all look forward to viewing the pics of this new addition in your reef!

BTW all ....my reasons for starting the thread were to see if I was sane in considering to purchase this coral. I definitely see the value in a one of a kind piece! I have been offered ridiculous gobs of money for a mille table colony in my tank and I know how hard it can be to part with a treasured piece. So in the end...thank god I only have a 75 gal tank that if full so I could not lose my wallet on this efflo even if I wanted to.

AgentSPS, I would pay $$ for a nice coral. Money isnt everything, but happinness is. If my tank brings me happinness, then do what it takes to get to that level. For me its a balance of everything such as family, tank, working out, work, etc. Life is too short to just waste it away :)

LOL yes but I seem to apply that theory to everything these days (280 gal upgrade, new BMW M3, new house, new furniture...............) ;) Needless to say...I got some cc bills to pay off! LOL

Well, I'm sorry to report the probable demise of this once fine efflo. I picked up the efflo this morning and when opened, it's water was extremely cloudy with that unmistakeable "bad acro" smell. When removed, the coral already was losing tissue around the perimeter. I would have liked to see a little larger amount of water shipped with size coral; but, the packaging was good and the water was still warm. I hope this recovers somewhat.... Below is a top down photo of it... the picture is a little blue/dark as my lights are not fully on yet. I will post again towards the end of the day.

oh man, that sucks steve. best wishes in its recovery. if anyone can bring it back to its orignal grandeur, you are the man to do so.

Steve,

Contact your local vet and ask them to sell you a couple of tablets of Chloraphenical. It's an anti-biotic used for horses and large dogs.

It should be a large yellow pill. set up a bucket, or plastic shoe box with your tank water. Pop in a small powerhead and cut the pill in 1/2 to let it dissolve.

Let the coral bathe for up to an hour - The time depends on how quickly the water temp drops in the bucket. I work outside so the temp drops quickly.

Be careful handling the pill - Wear gloves, and don't breathe in the dust when you cut it.

Once your done with the water, make sure you dump it in the toilet, not in the yard, it's harmful to plants and animals (Isn't that strange).

After the chlora dip, try a Lugol's Dip ( I use 2 eyedroppers per 1g) and let that sit for up to an hour.

2 days of this stops most bacterial infections and sometimes stops the loss of tissue.
