I don't think anyone really knows for sure. Some say it is a survival thing when stressed or sudden change. Others feeding or over feeding. I started with one about 7 years ago and now have 6 First started in a 29 gallon biocube. Two got a bit tight so we upgraded to a 40 breeder. Over the course of time they split here and there, nothing I could attribute it to, and now have 6. Back to too many of them in a small space (40 breeder) so upgrading to a 240 gallon.
One thing I notice now in my situation is that there is always one moving around trying to find the right spot. Balancing flow and lighting I'm guessing or a stronger foot hold. All the good rocks are taken I guess. I have found this fella on the glass, across the other side of the tank in between a hammer forest I have, then back on the glass. Oh well, 2 more months more or less before cycle is finished I think. Then they can all move around finding their happy spot
