How often to replace the calcium media

Hi,

I built a calcium reactor, and it is running very nicely for a few months. I read somewhere that I have to replace the media, but forgot how often. I am using ARM now.

The question is how often should the media be replaced. What is the benefit of replacing it? Can I just add more media when it goes down?
Thanks,
Peter

You really do not need to replace it, just refill the reactor when 50 % of the media has been used. If one chooses to replace it, it will just be a little more efficient as there is more active surface area. Old media has a tendency to loose its porosity, thus surface area.

When/if it turns to fine sand or muddy it tends to clog the output valve and the steam will become unstable, sometimes stopping. When that happens to me I just rewash the media and add it back in with the new media.

Mud can often be avoided by using coarser media CarribSea Geo-Marine or Seaflor .
