How quickly can a fish completely disappear?

I check/observe my tank everyday. When I feed I take an extra 10 minutes to observe everyone and make sure everyone looks healthy and happy, as a side effect this is also relaxing for me. My favorite part of the hobby other than the initial aquascaping. So 2 days ago, I noticed my small 2 to 3 inch yellow eye kole tang did not come out immediately for food but eventually circled up grabbed what I thought was less food than normal and went back into some rock work. I made a mental note that I thought he looked a little less fat than the previous week. Yesterday I came home late from work so maybe 22 hours later I fed my tank and no yellow eye kole tang. I searched the floor I have a screen but it does have a few gaps in the back. I searched the tank the overflow the sump nothing not a trace gone.

I am not asking why it died, I am wondering how long does it take for a fish to disappear? Had it died for whatever's cause I would have thought I would at least see a mound of shrimp and snails cleaning up the mess? I do have a small anemone which is a hair, bigger than this tang was. But the anemone was open and happy not balled up like when I feed it scraps. So can a tank really consume an entire fish in less than 24 hours?

Thank you Sk8r. I have read many of your posts and responses and appreciate you sharing your expieriences and knowledge with us newbies like me.

Keep in mind that most of the CUC in a reef tank is cryptic .... and wasn't specifically added. 12 hours, often less.

True just last week I have found at least 6 different rocks with white and purple tentacles coming out which can only be brittle sea stars that I never added to my tank.

I think in terms of how biologically 'hot' a tank is, nothing to do with temperature, per se, but biochemically active. Decay sets in really fast, slime happens, and the creatures that can eat flesh (snails and crabs) set to work; more slime happens as that breaks down, and the worms are there---they can only slurp slime, but there is a lot of slime, as bacteria break down the solids, the worms go to town with that, and pretty soon the current scatters the bones under the rockwork, and in a few hours there isn't even a crime scene.
