How rare are Purple Tang's getting?

I never see them in the stores anymore, and when I do they are very expensive. Are they rare due to Egypt trouble or mid east problems? I have had mine for 4+ years and got him for $60 at the LFS. Any thoughts?

Yes. All Red Sea fish are at a premium because of Mid-East trouble. I think most fish used to be shipped out of Yemen; then there was a bomb scare there and Fed-Ex either pulled out or made the inspection process impossible. This started before the Egypt-Libya revolts.

When they were getting them in they were always at a premium. Now that they are spotty they will increse. I have seen them sell lately for $160 +\- $20-30 and they don't last long at those prices.
Now sohals didnt really increase in price due to the nature of the fish and tank size requirements make them not so attractive to the people with small tanks. Thankfully!!! People are starting to listen about these cool fish. Leave them to the big tanks..

purple never really came in abundent when u think of all the fish stores ect nationwide, and have never really been cheap, from my understanding alot of the distrubutors over there have went out of business and getting the government to do their part for the fish to be shipped is spotting making it harder to get the fish shipped states side, plus shipping is more as it hits several spots before it actually gets here

A LFS owner tells me that there is 1 collecting station on the red sea and all critters are going to Europe 1st, then here. I had 2 purple tangs upto 3 months ago and one mysteriously died. I've been trying to replace him but cannot find one big enough locally yet.

Even a year ago I was seeing the purples go for $100, now I don' see them go for below $150. I'll be patient if I decide to get one.

mine was 130 plus tax a 13-14 months ago ago....and i have not seen one in person since then..have seen a few online but none in any of the "lfs" i frequent

guess NY is special cause my local vendors and store's have them regularly, unlike other redsea fish { my eightline flashers } that took me 3 years to get

My lfs has to buy sick purple tangs from various places just so they could have some in stock. They then nurse them back to health and when they are healthy they sell them for
$100 for probably a 2 in fish. Luckily a guy who i know that works at the lfs had a purple tang at about 2 inches and got him for $50.

PS: They bought 9 sick purple tangs and all of them survived.

well they're really hardy tangs

I was told by a wholesaler that the US is restricting all shipments of fish from that area and that they are still collecting and everyone else can get rs stuff but us right now and the few rs stuff that are coming in are getting shipped to another country before coming to us, they are not sure how long this ban is going to be.

I paid $64 for my small sized purple (2.5 inches) about 2 weeks ago. But I consider myself very lucky and figure that won't happen anytime soon again.

Hmmm, Petco here locally just received 4 in their last shipment. I go there to buy fish food and I browse through their fish every time, they were just finishing acclimating all their fish and they had 4 brand new purple tangs, all about 2-3".

Cant be that rare/hard to aquire if Petco is getting them in that quantity.

Yep, that's the price the local Petco had them for. I wish I had a bigger tank, I would have gotten one because I'm sure I wont see that price again for a long time, if ever.
