how to get a fish out?

first flip on a room light and see if you can see where the fish hides at during the night, wait till the tank lights have been out a few hours, then turn them all on. They move very slow and will almost swim into your net.

I have found that it is easier to just bite the bullet in the beginning and pull all of your live rock out of the tank and catch them with a net. Or maybe you could buy or make a fish trap.

use a small water bottle. cut off the top and invert it. Attach it with a zip tie through a hole on one side only, so you can open it again. Put in some bait, like brine shrimp and wait. you amy need to starve the tank for a day or two to entice the fish to go in.

I drain the tank with a large diameter hose, grab the fish out, then refill the tank with the water you just took out. simple, quick, avoids stressing all the fish and tearing out the rocks

does the fish trap need a line athached to the bottle to pull it once the fish is inside? Or do I just leave it in and the fish somehow gets confused and does not leave the bottle?

yes, once inside the fish typically will not be able to figure out how to get out. I like to hang by the tank though and pull out the bottle fairly quickly because if the fish learn how to get in and out the trap will not be effective in the future.

haha I had to rent the fishing pole from my son for $1. The best $1 I ever spent

I just tried the "fish trap" method, however none of the fish seem to have even tried getting into the bottle, as the artemia was still there after 1 day. Do the fish need to get accostumed to the bottle being in the tank before it becomes feasable to catch the wrasse inside?

I was trying to catch another fish with my DIY trap with a mirror at the inside end. I could have caught my 6 line a dozen times as he was trying to kill himself in the mirror. Since I was afraid he was going to get hurt, I took the mirror out and caught the coral beauty I was going for.

<a href="http://s554.photobucket.com/albums/jj424/fishyjewel/?action=view&current=FishTrap11-13-08.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i554.photobucket.com/albums/jj424/fishyjewel/FishTrap11-13-08.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The trap is a 99 cent plastic container with a slot cut in the top with a cordless circular saw. A piece of scrap acrylic for the door. The feeding tube is just a couple of pvc connections.

I had to drill a hole into the bottom of the door and put in a piece of plastic (disposible eye dropper) tip so it would stay in the slot. I was planning on using a zip tie but could them at the time.

Then just a long string, some food down the tube and wait. I let them go in and out a few times to feel more comfortable.

The entire process took less than an hour.

Good luck
Julie

I would have taken out the six line. But yes, you need a door controlled by a string or fishing line.
