How to get ****ed off in 2 seconds flat

simply walk into the henrietta petco....

to say I "loathe" that store would give the term "loathe" an almost happy sound to it... These stores are on the same level admiration as the black plague in my eyes.

While I usually avoid this place at what seems like all cost, I was asked to go there and pick up some supplies for the office parrot. This is usually my last option, I would rather visit a smaller "mom and pop" store for all my needs. From the fish to the birds to just about everything. But, sadly i was directed there by the powers that be in my little office. Perhaps out of morbid curiosity I found myself drifting towards the tanks of fish. Like a moth to a flame I somehow am pulled that direction.

And what do I see... If you guess a lovely assortment of fish all housed in a beautifully aquascaped tank designed to each fish's specifications then of course you would must have drank far to much before visiting this site and reading this post....

Lovely assortment of fish yes.. and that is where the dream ends my fish loving friends. I see some lovely large fish all crammed into the same 8 tanks. Some of the most colorful dogfaced puffers I have seen in recent months as well as two (yes two) panda puffers. These puffers cowering in the corners of the tanks as their maurading 4-5 inch long Picasso Trigger tankmates zipped around the tank and would occasionally sink it's teeth into the flesh of the poor puffers.

"spread these out fish out to more tanks" you might think... welll nooo you can't! cause the other tanks are just as packed with other fish. A veritiable cornacopia of lovely fish all squeezed into the the glass boxes that might just be their coffins.

I look at the poor dog face and think that the colors are just right for what I always wanted.... I know it's breaking every rule in my personal code to even think about buying from a petco... But maybe for the reason of rescue...

WAIT.. what am I thinking.. is this how petco makes their money, by making people feel bad that they doll out the money to "rescue" these fish from their captors? Has the fish industry finally gotten down to blackmailing those who care about fish and the fellow animals on this planet????

Perhaps, because my heart pleaded for someone to help these poor fish, perhaps whatever fish gods above (or below) would send down a bolt of lightning to smote this vile company. (preferrably after I have left the building). But, no lighting cometh, the wave of destruction never surges. I stand there staring at these lovely fish realizing that if I save them from this horrible life I simply fund the company to continue their shameful endeavors.

Luckily my care and concern was cut short as I glanced at the price tag of the common dog-faced puffer... $98 dollars! Yes, almost a Franklin for a fish from petco??? could I be reading this right? I am?

So, not only are they hurting the fish they expect only the wealthy to pay for these fish. Perhaps it's someone with brains running the company finally. Make the fish so expensive that no one can possibly by them, and then the problem will inevitably handle itself. The fish are safe, the company goes under, and the person that is responsible for the higher prices transforms back into Neptune and returns to the sea where he figures out his next plan of attack against the invading humans.

This is just my two cents, and a way for me to vent.... I did not "rescue" a fish, but I say it was hard. It felt like I was turning my back on someone I could help. Like the stray in the street that I can bring in and care for. But, unlike the stray, if I bring this one in, it only means that there will be more like him forcibly put there thanks to my caring. It was hard, but perhaps in the end, that is what has made the difference.

I love the hobby, and I care about my fish, I just wish people everywhere had the concerns I have. But, alas, I think we are few and far between.

I hope that when the aliens come down and decide to make us pets that they don't have a PetCo on Pluto.

Two Cents by Magnus.

Here here! I'm sure a lot of people here feel the same pain upon venturing into Petco. I had to stop taking my dog there because he lifted his leg on everything but maybe he was just voicing his opinion as well... :D

Seriously though, there are many stores besides just Petco that do this and, all in all, even though people that are in this hobby avoid shopping at those stores there will always be newbies that don't do their homework and learn the hard way that those stores are not the best option.

I had a bad Petco experience in regard to lizards. We purchased a "captive bred" African plated lizard from them only to find her covered in mites and ticks upon getting her home. I immediately called the store and was told I could either sell her back to them, let them treat her and re-purchase her later OR I could stop by for the medicine and treat her myself. I opted for #2 and she's been fine ever since. The kicker is that at that point in time only a rare few were actually being captive bred and all signs pointed to the only possibility being she was wild caught. The store later admitted this to be the case.

Anyways... I've found a few stores I can trust with my money as they will actually warn me about buying things if they're not in good health. I really, really wanted a desjardin sailfin tang, saw one in my favorite LFS, asked if it was eating, saw it avoid food, still wanted it and after taking a closer look and being advised properly, I left it there. If it's still there this coming weekend I may try again though... :D

I still get a kick out of hovering in their fish section though... I got an employee really red faced one day at the Greece store when I jumped in the middle of his "sure you can buy that 10 gallon and put 6 clownfish right in" conversation with a woman and I ended up talking to her for at least 20 minutes just educating her on as many basics as I could. She left the store and was adamant that she'd be doing some research and going elsewhere next time... man was that fun! And I didn't even get kicked out... :D

Euros are not cents :p

I have to say, I wish animal abuse covered our livestock. I think there's an exception for fish, but what about corals and anemones. They are animals as well. I see a lot of doomed anemones at LFS's. If these were puppies the storeowners would be in jail.

I hate to say that I stopped there tonight(tues) and I kid you not in the salt water section I counted 6 dead fish. The lady asked if she could help me I told her that I could not ever buy any livestock from them because I would not want to get my healthy fish sick she said all theres arehealthy and the ones that were dead only died from the tank mated beating them up.I just said thanks and left

no doubt, i was in the Heneratta petco a few weeks ago, just to buy a little 10 gallon tank, but anyways, those tanks were really crammed then, it was sad and the puffers did look awesome

the sad part about petco and larger chains like that, i beleive that they make most of their money on the supplys and not the "animals" so they will continue to make animals suffer for ever how long people buy their dog or cat food and supplys there...

dreaminmel- good luck on the desjardin sailfin tang, i hope ya find one cuz i know they are awesome, i love mine and she has a wonderful personality, she's my favorite fish... good luck again

I kind of think that bashing the national chains on this forum is a bit like shooting fish in a barrell. It's preaching to the choir & well, it's just not sporting.

I frankly just wanted to get that off my chest to people who wouldn't just roll their eyes...

I don't care about "sporting" I was searching for like minded people just to help me vent.

so, whatever.

I've done some rescueing from petco but it has really gone down hill. Everything has ich and other diseases.
