How to get them to host in Frogspawn....

Nice hammer!
I just picked up some False percs. and one as started to host my torch the torch responds kinda negatively, i am keep an eye on him just to make sure nothing happens if something goes wrong i am going to try and move the torch to confuse the clowns, they are pretty stupid, my other clown is hosting a trumpet coral!:p

I am not going to contribute to the above bickering... just give you a few examples as to what has happened in my tanks in the past...

My very first tank had a pair of false perculas. They hosted a heater, then powerhead, heater, intake to filter, skimmer pump, torch, hammer, frogspawn, candycanes, and finally hairy mushrooms in that order. Obviously, lol, the equipment did not mind at all :) They nearly killed the torch, then when they moved into the hammer that was VERY large, it nearly killed them. Nothing else was ever really bothered by them although, I am NOT saying it wouldn't be as they were only in that tank for six months.

My next pair, which are my B&W's pictured in this forum, have nearly killed any and all coral they came into contact with. I had a full blown acropora reef and even though my lone RBTA was in the tank, the male (when pushed out of the nem) would host everything else. At feeding times, the female would brutally rub everything near her. She broke several prize acro's that were getting to be over 8 inches wide. I even had a heck of a time fragging those things, lol!

Now that they are maturing and showing spawning behaviours, they are even beating up the nem which is easily ten times the females size.

I have had success over a year with certain clowns and definite failers with other's housed with corals. Since my clowns have matured quite a bit, they are now housed in one of my breeding setups with no coral, only the RBTA.

If it has worked for you, that is AWESOME!

As everyone else said, keep a close eye on whatever they host no matter if it is an anemone, LPS, SPS, or softie. No matter what species of clown, they all get very rough especially with age and spawning.

Corals might or might not tolerate Clownfish living amongst them... period.

I just got a forgspanw and was wondering how to get them to use it as a host.

Also I have had a pair of Ocelleris Clown who have been together scince they were very small. I moved them to my tank from downstairs in hoping the would spawn. That was in February. The female used to get fat with eggs but then reabsorb them.
How can I encourage them to spawn?
Introduce the coral and fish to one another in the same aquarium- the fish will do the rest.
It might not be a match made in heaven.
To get your fish to lay eggs, target feed them with good foods.
I use HUFA enriched mysids and Vibragro along with a rotation of other nutritious things. Good luck.

Maybe my situation is an exception. This is the problem with typeset. You can't translate tone. I, in no way meant my original post to be offensive or condescending which I think it was read as. I directly stated "in my case". This hammer had about 10 heads originally roughly 6 months ago. It now has 25+. I have yet to read anywhere that it is detrimental to the coral for clowns to host it. But I have observed it many different times with seemingly no ill effect to either. If there are links please fwd them. I'd like to educate myself further with this. Thank you.

Hey check this out! My clowns are alive and thriving and this coral must have 50 or more heads now! Crazy!!:eek1: Party on! ;) Apologies for the crappy point and shoot camera. :D

Holy crap that is the nicest Hammer I have ever seen. You could brake that thing apart and sell the heads for $20 a pop where I come from. I would like to know, how do you stop your clowns from hosting in anything they choose to host in. Do you sit there all day chasing them away with a stick? Things happen in nature that are unplanned and not always good for for every animal involved. Like when my cleaner shrimp molted and the crabs devoured it! Our tanks are supposed to be as close to natural as possible right? chirocato Bring that hammer back to the wild and maybe in 5 million years of evolution hammers wil be classified as acceptable clown hosts.

My Clown thinks he owns all of the space in my tank. Everytime I stick my hand in, he guards my LPS's by biting my hand. I've only seen him host in the Zoas though...

do you want to frag that hammer? really nice if you do want to frag it lemme know i'd like a head or to hahaha.

Let's have no talk about selling in here~dc

I imagine there are many factors involved. Some corals are just tough enough to survive, and some clowns are too aggressive. Not sure which applies. My Maroon in in Hairy mushrooms right now, unfortunately they must love it, they are taking over the tank. She's never been able to get near my cabbage. I'd say it took her a good year do disintegrate my colt to nothing, as she has done with every other coral I've had.

That is an absolutely beautiful hammer. Wow. I wish my clowns would host in my frogspawn or even my stupid xenia. My friends clowns host his frogspawn and he has no problems. As long as the coral doesnt close up when they are hosting in it, i'm fairly certain that it is fine, if not benefiting. Do the clowns try feeding your hammer?

Wow, I had no Idea this thread was still going! My clowns hosted eventually-

But then my cousin poured all my fishfood in my tank and bam-No more clowns. But I saved the frogspawn in my other tank and now it has two other clowns in it who took surprisingly quick. Pics will follow later....

Thank you. Yes, the clowns always bring food back to it. It's hilarious to watch.

FishboyBT, that's great! I was just thinking an update might be in order so I searched it out. ;)

My GSM Clown is currently hosting in a bed of Fire and Ice Zoas. They don't even bother closing any more even when she is laying on top of them. It's funny to watch her try to feed them, she spits food at them which just drops down for the hermit crabs to go after.

My Clown hosts in my Zoas too...

Thought everyone might like an update on the clown/hammer controversy. ;) The hammer is now the size of a basketball. I have had to prune probably 30-40 heads off it since this thread started since it grows like a weed. And the clowns still call it home...
