how to keep blue

also... with the 20k xm and from what you said about the VHO I am assuming that it is 2 actinic lamps you are missing a good amount of the spectrum might want to think about switching at least one of the VHO's to a daylight lamp... in the pic the tank looks pretty immature how long has it been up.....

I would put the coral closer to the middle of your tank where light output would be greatest. It looks like it's in the end of the tank. If not excuse my suggestion. Also, if you have a magnetec ballast a 10k xm would get you alot more par.

. Try to get Alk around 7 DkH because that's close to NSW levels.

NSW has 8 DKH or an alk reading of 2.9. In a closed system a higher alk is desirable..I run mine at 11.2 DKH. ,alk reading 4.00.That is with CA at 450.

i have a 75 gallon tank with 45+ turnover and its still not enough.... im shooting for at least 60-70 turnover... what im trying to say 10x is nothing at all... its like a hob filter on the back of ur tank running.. lmao..

ok i like my tanks blue so i have the 20k but once its life is over im switchin to a 15k i have a 10k but i hate how it looks

msm if u read before i dont have a mag 3 on ther i have a mag 7 and i hvae abpout 16 times turnover using the calci was sayin i was thinkin abouyt adding the mag 3

well i absolutly hate barbottom tanks so i would never even consider doin that( not to be rude to you barebttomers)

now im am confused about alk readings i use my test and it says to take the total number of drops it took to change color and divide it by 2 so it took me 8 and i divided it by 2 and got for so that is what my test says my alc is

I also cant put coral in the middle because of my center brace ao that is why i just bought my dual 175 watt balast and i am goin to europe for 2 weeks leavin this thursday so i dont want ot hool it up before i get back

also while im gone im sticken the 10k i have layin around on so that would be good for my tank and i dont have to lok at it and when i get back im buyin the 15k's

thanks for all the input everyone

careful just switching... there is a HUGE par diff between those 2 bulbs also might want to think about something besides the 15k you are better off with the 20. the 15's didnt get good remarks, maybe a 14k is more what you are lookin for... hamilton makes a decent one... also how old is the tank?

he is the histrory of the tank

when i first got in to the hobby i got the 37g and a skilter fileter all was cool for a year than the hair algae came for about a year then one day i got fet up with it and tore it apart got all new rock, sandbed, a wetdry and a euroreef. that lasted for a year then i added halides( had pcs the whole time) the halides were good all the stonys were polyping out nice but not to much growth then one day i had to make a hospital tank for my blue trang and took 15 gallons out and that sent the tank crashing for 2 months the tank was a death cave to any sps so i tore down the tank again replaced all water and sandbed9 because media from my phosban reactor leaked in) but kept all rock. the new water was mixed using tropicmarin and since then nothing has died fish or coral. so technically 5 years but new system about three months

also all my lfs carries are the xms and a coworker has the 15k's and has been getting greay results so i actually decided to get the new bulb before my trip because i just threw the 10k on and i cant stand how yellow looks.

Missed that ... combine that with 175w bulbs - and IMO you might like how the tank looks, but the corals might not give their full potential.

Read up on 175's. Iwasaki just came out with a blue bulb [14k?] that gets good PAR ratings - I'd consider something like that above the XM's.

While `look' of the tank is nice to have - gotta focus on making the corals happy. The nicest lighting on struggling corals looks like struggling corals.

The color change from blue to a green-blue is a sign of "high" phosphate. Marine_Freaks avatar is a great example of this. The reason why quoted high, is because even traceable amounts in the SPS game is considered high.

ok so what would you do:

1. keep 20k and add a daylight bublb to the vho's

2. keep both blue bulbs and addd the 10k xm

3.or put in the 15k xm and turn one of the blue vho bulbs to a daylight bulb

I second what MiddletonMark said, go with the Iwasaki 14k. That is going to be your best bulb in terms of growth and color in the 175 watt flavor.

I also second what others have said in regards to flow. A turnover of 10x is pretty stagnant, IMO and it sounds like you have overestimated your turnover to begin with. Spend your money on getting your tank setup right before spending any more on sps corals. Also, I would get some better test kits. Salifert are good hobby level kits.

BTW, what are your calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels? Others have brought these up but you haven't answered. These 3 levels are very important in keeping sps corals.

Lastly, spend some more time reading books and on the forums. There is a lot of information to know about keeping sps corals but if you want to be successful with them you need to do the research.

Maybe I missed something, since I only skimmed the thread, but its hard to belive that there are 0 nitrates and phosphates in such an overstocked tank.

A blue tang, solarenthes wrasse, circular wrasse, yellow watchman, and a red scooter blenny in a 37 is total overkill.
