How to keep salt from clumping?

Every time I buy a bucket of salt when I first open it the salt is powder. The next time I do a water change the salt is one big block of salt. Is there any tricks to prevent the salt from clumping.

I keep mine in gallon Ziploc Bags, several of them.Aside from that, I have had luck keeping salt in my home, in a closet, rather than my garage storage room.

Try a dehumidifier. I had high humidity in my basement to the point that the framing felt damp, there was white mold growth, and it smelled very musty. I put in a GE (?) from Sam's Club. It registered 100% humidity and took about 2-3 weeks until everything dried out. I set it for 50% which I read is ideal for firearms storage and have no problems at all.

yea ive noticed when exposed to air or water its no GOOD and will clump up on you. Make sure your bucket lid is on tight to keep air from getting to the salt

I transfer my salt into a container with a screw on top that has a oring seal on it. and it keeps it in great shape.

The instant ocean buckets have an o-ring that has always sealed up for me. As long as you keep the bucket closed, it stays powder from the start to the end of the bucket, IME. I alway make an effort to keep the bucket closed. Closing/resealing the bucket if I'm not going to remove more salt immediately. Not keeping the bucket open for more than a minute or two at a time. JMTC & GL!

I bought my first 5 or so buckets of salt (instant ocean purple top) in the 160G size bucket. I have an empty one I keep refilling with the 200G box size (with 4 sealed bags) 3 bags will fill an empty purple top bucket and the fourth bag I just cut open and use the whole bag for mixing in my brute for my large bi monthly water change. As long as you push the lid back on the bucket all the way your salt will be PERFECT all the time.

So buy a bucket of salt or two you WILL use it all eventually even with a small tank and the resealable buckets work GREAT for keeping the salt a fine powder.

i steal my wife's tupperware containers and measure out a 10g WC worth of salt in each one, i buy the red sea coral pro 55, so i get 5 containers and one short-changed WC :)

Is clumping make the salt bad?

Some will tell you not to use it, others say it OK. I had a bucket that was full of clumps (before I started getting IO salt in bags) and I used it with no issues that I could see. And my tank is full of sps, lps and some delicate critters. But that's just my experience, not science.:eek2:

Some say that the clumping results in chemical reactions that may the salt less than ideal, maybe even toxic.

You say your salt comes in buckets, right? I buy them the same way, and these are usually airtight, with an o-ring seal. My bucket of salt lasts me about 6 weeks, and it NEVER clumps in the bucket. I just make sure I seal it closed after each use, and make sure t use dry implements to measure out the salt. What are you doing wrong?

change the storage location of the container or get a dehumidifier, make sure the lid is on TIGHT. I save a IO bucket that has a screw-on lid an use it to store my salt not since what I buy now comes in bags.
