Hi All,

I've got one rock that has become infested with bubble algae. Luckily it's isolated from the other rocks. What is the best way to nuke a rock to get rid of the algae and then put it back in the display.

Thanks,

Well since your in Canada, I think I would leave it out on the deck for a few days. Bring it in and let it thaw, give it a scrub.

I thought it could live thru the cold... But i am not sure???

I would say Hydrogen peroxide Spray and scrub rinse well in old tank water .. its how we clean the Water line in the fuge tanks in the basement.. We lower the water a bit spray it let it sit for a hour then wipe it off ..

my Question is what is causing the Algae.. i would take a look at nutrients in the tank .

Siphon out while GENTLY pulling off.

Get a herd of Emerald crabs and fix your parameters.

In the end it's about getting your water flow and water parameters in check.

Or you can Google: Cooking Live Rock

Strange that it's not on my other rocks. I should note that it's on a Mag Rock. This is a synthetic rock that has a magnet to attach to the rear panel...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

How many emerald crabs would you suggest for a 40G?

Thanks,

The only time I ever Nuked was for Dinos.

The HELL of all algae.

Finally used Dino-X. Killed the dinos, hair algae and ALL my inverts too.

Dinos is why every time I start thinking about adding a new coral to my tank. I rethink and say nah... It ain't worth it and I already have a beautiful reef.

Thanks for the link, very informative.

So I didn't have any bleach laying around but had some white vinegar. I put it in a tub of straight vinegar to soak for a day or two and will give it a thorough scrubbing afterward. Do you think that will do anything? Figured if it works to soak my tank equipment, it might work for this.

Also got a couple emerald crabs today.

Well, You just soaked it vinegar.

Better google carbon dosing with vinegar.

If you don't get the vinegar out of the rock before you put it back in...I suspect that vinegar will lead to to your next enjoyment.

Awesome bacteria bloom due to carbon dosing, overdose.

This rock is not porous though, it's just synthetic, no holes, so I imagine scrubbing the exterior should get the job done...hopefully ;)
