How to prepare for window and A/C changes. (ft laud airport related)

Gives Bad Advice.
I don't know if anyone here has gone through this or not but figured I'd ask.

I'm within the area of the Fort Lauderdale Airport that is effected by the Noise Mitigation work. If you're not familiar, homes in the surrounding area are getting all new windows, doors, insulation, and a/c relocation/upgrades as part of the noise mitigation agreement for installing the south runway.

Windows and doors will be swapped. My a/c unit is being relocated.

I'm trying to find out if the home will be without power during the hours of work. The room that my tank is in will be without a window for less than a day 9a-5p.

I do not run a chiller on my tank.

It's about 140 gallons total water volume.

How would you go about preparing for this? Have any of you gone through this yourself that has some insight?

I would buy a lot of Ice, and shutoff the lights for the day. Keep an eye on the thermometer and add Ice INSIDE a bag as needed to keep temperature below 81F.
Hope this helps.

If you're really paranoid, I can let you borrow my 1/4hp Aqualogic back up chiller and pump. But I think you'll be fine without it if its going to be just one day. PM if you need it. It's in Kendall.

Freeze RODI water in 2 liter bottles or smaller and put in your sump.....and monitor temp... You don't have to use RODI...But I am paranoid about accidental water release...and you can always use the RODI water later for cleaning something...

Yeah I'd freeze large blocks of water or gallon water bottles. Put a fan to blow over the surface and no lights depending. It's HOT outside. I'd also leave your canopy and stand open to encourage evaporation you'd be surprised how much you can cool with evaporation.

Your best bet is to borrow the chiller offered and hopefully you have a controller to run it on demand. But it's gonna take 10 days to change the Windows? A/C relocation shouldn't take longer than a day.

window should take less then an hour to do . done it myself . had an ac relocated took about 2 hours in my home that is if you got a good A/C guy

Thank you for the advice guys.

It's not just windows and a/c but those are my main concerns causing heat in the house. They're also re-insulating the crawl space in the attic. The a/c is being moved from up on the side of the house to ground level and the handler is being moved to a closet inside the house.

As for the windows and doors, it's about 10-11 windows and doors combined. I'm assuming they're not going to be running the A/C as I've seen the other homes being worked on in the surrounding areas having their doors and windows open during the project.

My next concern, is whether or not the electric is going to be run during the hours of work.

I do have a controller, so that's easy.

They gave us a 10 business day estimation to finish the entire project.

That's insanely slow. I just talked to the supervisor of the guys who redid the windows of my distant neighbor and he said it took them about 8 hours to do the 4 windows. I would get another quote 10 days sounds like laziness!

I would call them and ask if they are going to shut off all of the electricity or not. For windows, no I can't imagine they would, but for moving the AC Unit they might turn off some parts of it.

It's not a quote. It's being handled by the air port as part of an agreement made for expansion of the Fort Lauderdale airport. I can't use a different company as we aren't paying for it.

They must be hourly :D

You know that your house will be impacted by construction. Honestly, I would look at that chiller and a generator that can run your critical stuff. Prep to cover a realistic worst case scenario and you will be fine. Don't forget extension cords and multi outs, and don't overload any of them.

The windows will take an hour or 2 for each one to remove and replace. It will take 2 days to complete your house. The power will not be interrupted. The Ac moving, may take one or two days depending on what they have to do. The power to the house will not be cut off. They will throw the breaker to the circuits they are Messing with. The power to tour tank should not be touched. I am a contractor, but do not work with the city. This is what I would tell my clients

Ah I just presumed they were going to give some sort of voucher reimbursement. I believe they did that in my friend's neighborhood in Houston when the airport expanded. If FLL handles it all that is a little easier I think. If you can't be home for the couple days they are going to be there (in addition to the advice on borrowing a chiller/generator from someone) I would also make sure to cover the tank with a clear plastic garbage bag or something in case there is dust.

Good luck!

Gotta love free upgrades...
I'd go with the chiller offered as well, although I just swapped tanks and went from a leaking 90g to a 120g which is located OUTSIDE in my covered screened patio. I placed everything; live rock, fish, snails, blue legs, starfish & corals into a 5' round plastic Walmart kiddie pool with a Mag 9.5 for circulation (shooting at an arc, upwards for aeration) and also had a 30" floor fan pointed at the pool on a timer from 11am to 5pm. This was from June 17 til yesterday July 9. Everything worked out well and only lost a couple snails.
Good luck, you should be good.

Btw, I found out that the contractors the county hires has to leave the house every night in a "live in condition" meaning, whatever windows and or doors they were working on during the day must be completed before they leave for the day. Also someone over 18 has to be there while the work is being done. They can't shut off power and let refrigerator and freezer items go bad nor your tank without power.
Hope all goes according to plan
