Can I paint PVC that will be submerged in my tank? If so, how do I approach this so that its safe (for the inhabitants) and functional (wont flake over time)?

If it matters, Im looking at sch. 40 whitce PVC to be pained black.

I don't sand the pipe, but krylon fusion is what I use. Ticks me off I have to go to wally world to get it though.

You can buy black PVC pipe and fittings from Savko. I got some for my build since I have a smoked glass overflow. HTH.

Hi, Wally World is the name of one of my cats, the other two are Suzy Cheesecake and Winston Churchill.

For paint on submerged piping I used the best spray paint from Home Depot, forgot brand but it lasted over two years before needing any touchup.

Savko has black pvc and fittings!? Wish I knew that 1 month ago..

Someone suggested savko on an older thread and provided a link. I went to the site and got so frustrated after a few minutes I abondoned that idea. The website is horrible and I just couldnt find what I was looking for. It was real easy to find white PVC and part to make PVC furniture.

Somebody tell me if this sounds wrong maybe I landed on the wrong site...

In the Savko website home page with the search function:

Search for "Black PVC" for all the black PVC pipes.

Search for "Black Fittings" for all the black PVC fittings.

Valspars "plastic paint" from Lowes works great... I painted a lot of pipes and they are still holding strong after 1 1/2 yrs.

I've always heard krylon fusion and that's what I've used to black out acrylic in my sump and haven't had any issues yet

I never had any previous experience with Savko, but I found everything ok. Just go to the page with all the PVC fittings, and all the black stuff is at the bottom of the page. I placed the order online and I had everything within a few days. I agree the website has a weird ordering format, but it's not that difficult once you get it. The black fittings are limited, but they have the basics. I'm using all black fittings for my overflow box. Should look slick!

I too bought from savko, and agree the websites leaves something to be desired. But the bulkheads are very good quality and the price is right.

I painted mine with Krylon Fusion in June. I let it dry for a week. It started flaking off within 2 weeks. Not sure why but I will never do it again.

I've had good success with Rustoleum's textured black plastic spray paint. I started with new clean pipe, sanded every inch and applied many light coats. Keep in mind that if you have tank inhabitants with rasping mouthparts (urchins, etc.), the paint will wear sooner.
Glass-holes has black fittings, no lengths of pipe though. http://www.glass-holes.com/Plumbing-Supplies_c4.htm .

did you make sure that the pipe was clean ..hey green scratch pad and some lite soapy water will help do the trick .there could have been some grease on the pipe from when it was extruded .

What is the deal with every single scrub pad and sponge in the grocery store stating "Not for Aquarium Use"? I mean I could see some having some or other detergent or chems but everything, including the plastic scrubbers?

Im going to give the savko website another chance...
