How to tell the difference between growth and burns

Burns should be white and rough, skeleton may be evident. The area would grow algae fairly soon. Growth could be white as well but smooth and tissue would be evident, and an axial (on the tip) corallite should be present on the stag. Birdsnest should have corallites all the way to the tip.

basically, if you are asking...it's deterioration most likely from excessive phosphate and nitrate....Alk burns are much "rarer" and were blamed for too much nutrients, too often.
