How to tell the difference between Picasso and Rod Onyx clownfish?

How do you tell the difference between Picasso clowns and Rod Onyx clowns? I picked up a pair of nicely colored Percs today and I am not sure what they exactly are. They are beautiful though. I will be posting pictures sometime later on. Thanks!

Basic difference, Rod's onyx have a black dorsal and black connecting all three bars (and then some). Picasso's are just misbars (puzzle piece looking bars), and I suppose they don't even have to be A. percula, but A. ocellaris as well.

Tell me what you guys think they are. Thanks.

If you didn't get them from Rod then they are not Rod's Onyx. :D.

Onyx refers to the amount of black. (Black connections between the three white bars)
Picasso refers to the amount of white. (White markings that cover more than the normal amount, usually in odd patterns)

Your female is neither onyx nor picasso. (But keep an eye on her, white stringy poop is a sign of internal parasites and I would not be surprized if she was starting to develop a case of brookynella (sp?).

If you really stretched the definitions, I suppose you could consider your male both onyx and picasso, but I would think that in the opinion of most people he wouldn't really be either one.

When I got them I put them in a quarantine dip in a bucket for about 6 hours. Right now they are in my quarantine until I know they are pathogen free and acceping foods.

So you're saying I have an odd pair? Nonetheless, I still believe they look beautiful. I love the coloration and markings.

Are these just weird mis-bar Perculas?

Technically both Onyx and Picasso is just A. Percula. The names are descriptors for the black marking pattern (Onyx) and the white patterns described above are the Picasso. However typically they are A Percula.

I have never personally seen these descriptors referred to A. Ocellaris. However you could make an argument that a Black and White Ocellaris with orange markings was an "Onyx" but that would be a massive stretch of the original term.

Onyx: A. Percula with Black pectoral fin and black connection all three bars.

Picasso: A. Percula with unusual white misbars/puzzle looking bars.

So in reality, you have a very cool set of A Percula. Whether they are Onyx or Picasso is in the eye of the beholder.

I wouldn't if I were you. They are technically misbarred A. Percula and probably tank bred at that. While they are very cool, I doubt that people would buy them as a Picasso. Usually Picasso refers to a specific stock breed from ORA although it started before ORA started their Picasso line.

I don't think you have a gold mine or anything, certainly a unique pattern but nothing out of the ordinary.

Here is a pic of a Picasso at the top:

Beautiful WC percs. The black may fill in and they may look like Onyx. The female has misbar marking. They are not Picassos.

Your Clowns are beautiful. Don't get so hung up on rarity or the correct name for them. If they are healthy and if they bring you joy then they unique and special. I am sure they will thrive in your tank after they have had the time to relax in the Quarantine tank.
