So this is the (rather dirty) sump for my first marine tank. The sump dimensions are (48" x 20"W x 18"H):

The water will flow from left to right in the picture above.
The first stage is this:

It looks like a good area for some mechanical filtration - some of those sponges cut to size? I might try and have some filter socks underneath the sponges, but I will have to measure it all up properly to ensure they fit.
Then it flows into this section:

I'm thinking the protein skimmer and future reactors can go here.
Then we have:

Any ideas for this section? I don't know what the little blades of glass on the bottom are for:

The final section is this:

Obviously the return pump will go here. Should I have anything else?
There is also a refugium (of sorts) in the final section:

The bottom of this box has a big strip missing, which is where the water (and copepods?) drip into the return area.
I think I'd like to grow some chaetomorpha. And I'm also thinking of having a block of Marine Pure too (need to do some more research on that, just came across the product today). What about a deep sand bed?
Being a complete beginner with marine/reef aquarium keeping, I would love to hear people's ideas before I start on this.
