HUGE crack!!! HELP

buy a new tank!

buy a new tank!

Stinger, sorry to hear about the incident...
Sounds like you actually got pretty lucky. Could have been a lot worse (could have lost ALL the water in the tank, the tank could have been fully stocked, and worst of all your house could have caught fire!) I know it sucks (similar thing happened to me once) but I was just trying to look on the bright side!

If it were me, I would definitey buy a new tank. Think of how much money we spend on LR, fish, corals, equipment.... why chince out on the ONE thing that holds everything together!! I learned my lesson with a 55g glass tank I got used and tried to fix.... long story short, seam broke and spilled 35 gallons of water all over my rug which seeped into the drywall. Not fun!!

I know it can be pricey, but buy a NEW tank!!

Cooking rock does NOT kill every thing off!!!!! Things that don't require light THRIVE, things that require light will grow back.

Cooking my rock did not kill star pylops, zoos, feather dusters (they bread like rabbits) pods, worms, bacteria, coraline, and many other things I can't think to list.

i think that if you can determine that it was for sure that peice of wood (sounds like that was the cause to me)....you can replace the front pane and be just fine. Infact, now is a good time to price out some starfire glass ;-)

Like 50 people responded before I did  IME it will cost about the same as a new tank to have the front pane replaced unless you can find a good place to do it. Every time I have looked into it, it was simply not worth the time and risk.

That is the second time I have seen a powerstrip do that, but my friends accually melted the plugs into the strip. I keep my power strips hanging off the wall, as far from the tank as I can to avoid this potential source of fire.

HTH,

I think that is what im going to do....unless I can get that glass changed super cheap im not going to risk it.....Im hoping I can find a 75g tank in the $200 range
One more question....I have 30lbs of baserock comin in this week....would it be a good idea to add the base rock to the cooking rock or wait until the tank is ready???
cheers!

My 210 broke after a year and a half. The crack looks eerily like the one in your picture. AGA replaced the tank, but I downsized to a 180. The 210 was too deep to work on. I hope never to experience that again. Fortunately, it happened on a Saturday afternoon, so I was there to deal with the crisis and damage to the house was minimal.

Yeah the wood you put in the top broke it. If you wedged it in there. That was the first thing to come to mind when you said the crack went top to bottom. Glass doesnt bend well so its just going to snap if it bends more than slightly.

As for replacing that pane. It is possible and pretty easy if all the proper steps are followed. It would definitly be cheaper. I am new to the area so i have no clue were to tell you to get the glass

The OP mentioned cooking his rock and some people jump in attacking him for it.

My guess is that they have never cooked rock and thus do not realize that cooked rock maintains a huge diversity of life minus the annoyances and all of the detritus in the rock. :)

I believe that Montreal has a Big Al's, and I'd look there first. They quoted me a price of $230 for a 125g (rectangle), and should be able to quote you a competitive price for the aquarium you're seeking.

...Has anyone ever just replaced the front glass??? ....

A freind of mine did.. unfortunately he was awakened by an occurrance similar to your own...Except his was more of a POP! CRASH! SPLASH!, as the entire front piece of glass popped right off and drained all 150 gallons(along with puffers, triggers, wrasses, etc...), instantly onto his apartment floor. "Why should I ask about a pet deposit?", he replied to my inquiry as to how his apartment management allowed a fishtank that large while he was setting the tank up....I'd hafta advise you to hold out for a few months and wait until you can afford a new tank.

Yeah I would hate for my 150 to pop and dump on my livingroom floor. My house would be trashed. 15 gallons is bad enough. all of it would be a shame.

Thanks guys
I appreciate all the help!!
I will definetly get a new tank...I dont want to risk anything and replacing a front glass does seem like a pain in the a**...
I am now debating if I should cook my LR....and if I do...does it have to be for full 2 months??? my rock has been cycling in my tank for 4 weeks before so im not sure how long it needs....the water in the bin with LR is crystal clear so i dunno if even this rock needs to be cooked....what if I only cook it for about 3 weeks will that just be a waste??
Im also getting 30lbs of base rock this week....should I put the base rock with the existing rock while its cooking or wait until i put all the rock in the tank??
thanks
Cheers!
