Huge Maxima, got it for $99!

So this 12-14" clam has been at a lfs for over a year under some weak power compact lights, I asked the manager when he was going to make me a deal on it so it would stop loosing color and start to thrive....%50 off $199 and it got a new home. It needs nurturing and real light (I have 3-175 MH over a 72g so it should color right up.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm keeping CA up and feeding Phyto Feast Live and Oyster Feast.

i would be carefull about giving it too much light too quick if it has been under pc's for that long. you could fry that thing very quick with some intense lighting. nice score though and i hope he does good for you.

just keep an eye on him cause it can be hard to bring clams back if they get to far gone. and one that size dying over night could cause serious water quality issues if not taken care of right away.

he does look like he is expanding nice for you though. good luck

I only have 350W running at this time, haven't moved my reef over yet so I'm sure I could even reduce it down more, but I have seen no signs of stress in the last 48 hours. It seems to be opening happily and all. The thing is HUGE. Almost need a 6ft tank for it...but I am a single parent/student so that's not going to happen for a few years.

Thank you for the information. This forum always reminds me how much I don't know. How important are the fluorescent?bulbs??? I.E. should I go buy some cheap T5 retros for my hood or can I wait until I find a nice VHO set???? (I only have MH right now, just moved the tank ...it is established however)

Well I bought some 48" t6ho bulbs\reflectors\integrated ballasts for the tank yesterday, hope the clam enjoys them.

The clam is seemingly doing very well so far.

if you have hallides and t6ho. That's pretty good lighting and good calcium will nurture it back to good health. The color should come back within a couple of months i think. That's a good buy at that size.
