Huge tank loss

SniperSPS:

Couldn't tell you how bad I feel for you. I can only imagine how I would feel if it happened to me, so my heart skipped a beat when I read about it. I sincerely believe everything in life happens for a good reason, and there is always a lesson to be learned. Even if it is to be patient in bad times. I am sure you will get things straighten up and going even better in no time. I did not post in the linked thread above as it was already closed by the time I went to it.

For the rest of you, even though your intentions may be well placed, this may not be the time for speeches about generators and such. Maybe in time it will be, but for now just let time heal!

Almost noone in SoCal has backup generators. Rolling blackouts are a phenomena of the last couple of years. Prior to that it simply hardly ever happened. I grew up (born/bred) in SoCal and I've seen what's happened with energy costs and service delivery over the years. Now granted we've had a phenomenal amount of population growth the last 20 years and yes it's put a strain on the infrastructure.

When you look at 2004 when we had first had them, there were several "planned" generator diversions/scheduled maintenance or whatever during the July/Aug time frame. They had "scheduled" rolling blackouts that year for non LADWP custumers ie guys like Hugo b/c they couldn't keep up with demand--course since 10% or so of their generaters were down on a scheduled basis..... Now exactly how does that make sense? That is well known as the peak energy usage in SoCal. It's not like our winters drive electrical usage. I'll tell you how it makes sense--the 20-30% rate hikes that Edison has gotten approved this year. Thank god I'm LA DWP, a "regular" old school public utility. Our rates are substantially lower and our issues with brown outs and blackouts are substantially less. In fact LADWP generates a surplus that it sells to the coned chumps. So who to blame? Deregulation in my book, but that's neither here nor there.

Hugo, tremendous loss, no way for words to express that. Hope you can bounce back.

addendum: I think Hugo did have a backup generator of some sort. Just didn't last the 2 days.....

I am sorry to hear about his loss. How can you still have rolling blackout and Enron isn't in control anymore?

Fortunately there not in control of power anymore, however
Unfortunately ken lay still has Friends in HIGH PLACES! even though he's "DEAD". and they still control power.

he had a generator, didn't start it initially because he was told blackout would only last a couple of hours...

So I guess lesson to be learned is, don't trust ANYTHING SCE tells you... get that generator rolling...if power returns in 2 hrs, turn it off... it wont hurt having it on that is for sure.

Either way, sucks to hear Hugo. I am in the process of opening my own reef supply website so if I can be of any help please let me know.

Hugo, I've got a Honda EU200i Generator that is VERY quiet.. You might want to look into one for your next setup. I dont have neighbors to bother, But last time we lost power for about 12 hours I had a standerd Loud Generator that drove me crazy.. I was glad I had it but still it was pretty loud.. Sounded like someone was cutting the grass.. My honda EU sounds like the jetsons car lol. With it running inside the garage I can just hear it in the house.. If its outside I cant hear it at all from in the house.. HTH and sorry for your lose

Don't know how practical it is for those with consistent power, but I have an auto transfer switch where if the power goes out, the generator automatically kicks on. When the power is resumed the generator shuts off after 3 minutes of power being restored.

I had this wired into the house when I was building. There are numerous power outages here and sometimes this will last for 8-10 hours, so it's nice not to have to worry about no oxygen getting in to the tank.
