i know this is inadvisable, but im itching to try it. my humu is only about 2.5"-3", i rally want a clown, but will settle for a niger. with my humu being the size it is. should i get a bigger niger if i do get one, and what would be the most favorable size for the clown.

ohh did i mention im pondering attempting this in a 55???? yea... i must be loosing my mind.
i do plan to go to a bigger tank in about 9 months.

anyway exactly how impossible is this?

Just wait until you go bigger.

If you got a small or the same size Niger or Clown it would probably be ok but just for the short term.

i have a humu and clown trigger in the same 80 gallon tank. they are about 3.5" or so and they have never showed an signs of aggression to me while ive had them together, which has been a little over a year. i plan to upgrade to a 240g this year. i used to have a niger in the tank but i swapped it out for the clown. the humu and niger did well together as well, never saw any aggression between them, and i had them for about 4 or 5 months together.

No offense - but if you have had a CT for over year and he's only 3.5" something is not right, that should be a red flag. That very, very slow growth even if you got him as tiny, teeny, baby. Very slow. That's big time stunted growth - I'll bet his colors are poor as well.

Lots of people think they have pulled off something that the "experts" here on RC told them would not work (i.e. mixing species, small tanks etc), but most of the time when I have seen these fish first hand, they are very unhealthy with poor colors and slow growth. The owner simply didn't realize that the fish looked dull, or skinny, etc because they had never seen a healthy one.

I was thinking the same thing. The last CT I dealt with we got at about 1.5" long, and he was over 6" before the year was out.

skwirl,
I agree with marrone, wait until your upgrade. It's very rare for people to get their upgrade when the plan on it. Something always delays the setup. It's more common for people not only to not do the upgrade when they plan, but to not get it at all. Why risk losing all your fish because you're in a hurry to get one. It's much safer once you already have the room.

I Like Triggers,
often the first sign that a CT has switched to its aggressive mode is that everything else in the tank is dead.

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=787623 a thread about my clown growing slow, lets not hijack, but now im concerned

Like I said 5-6" in a year is very, very comon with CT - less is almost always due to some type of stress (including underfeeding, small tank, tankmates, poor water quality etc.).

What does the belly look like on your CT? People need to understand that when you buy a small clown (1-2") it's a juvi - they really need to be powerfeed. Feed them 5times plus a day, whatever it takes so that they don't look skinny.

Coming from a breeding background, it's so frustrating for me to visist people's houses and see underfeed fish (espically juviniles). Everyone loves to brag about how good their $80 skimmer works, but when they see how I feed my fish they realize why you need a robust setup if you are going to keep predator fish as juvies.

I think if you look at his post the CT was under an inch and it grow from under an inch to about 4" in 9-10 months isn't that far off. What he feeding it isn't bad, though he could feed it some clams and urchins. It's in an 80gal tank and his nitrates could also be a little high and he does have other fish in the tank which could be causing a slower grow rate. Once he moves it to the 240gal tank it should probably grow a lot faster just from more space and better water conditions, hopefully.

Without seeing a picture, showing growth it's very hard to tell if the fish is under sizes and not being feed enough or correctly.
