Hydnophora

I got one of these a while ago and I am finding the tips starting to burn off after two weeks.

I am only running 4 T5 HO bulbs and had this pretty much up top in my 90. What I noticed was good polyp extension early in the light period with one bank lit up. Then when the second bank came on the coral would retract pretty tight. now the tissue is gone from most of the tips.

Lighting schedule is

8:30 am -10 PM with one set of 10k and Actinic
11 am - 5 pm for the second pair.

two 3/4 w led moon lights running 24/7 right now due to not running a third timer.

I moved the coral down thinking that it was asking for a break in light. I would really like to hear from people with experience with these corals as to how they react to stuff and any tips for getting this thing to recover.

I keep my Hydnophora in the lowest light area of my tank. Hydnophora I tend to treat more like an LPS rather than a SPS. Moving yours down was a good choice. If you have further issues perhaps look at your water chemistry specifically alk.

FYI, Hydnophora can be really aggressive with long sweeper tentacles, caution with placement is important. My piece has killed a few other corals.

i have mine low/mid tank (4 inches from sand bed) in a 15 gallon under old 4x24w t5's that i should be replacing these upcoming weeks.

adding to smtank's comment... i had a small birdsnest colony fall on it (i'm guessing it was on 30-45 minutes) and killed the birdsnest branches that were touching it.

At work I have one piece about 5 inches from the surface, right under a 250 W halide and twin t5 and another piece of the same mother colony about 20 inches lower than the first. Both pieces are doing fine with good polyp extension, but definately don't like very high flow.

The one up to has an interesting growth pattern, it grows stubby branches up but also cascades down as plate form. So much so that it recently reached a huge colony of eyphyllia and proceeded to attack it, killing a baseball sized part of it overnight.

Under radions, my green one is way up at the surface too with great growth and polyp extension. It's attacking the neighbors as well.

My blue hydnaphora is mid-level and hasn’t had as much growth being half way down. But to be fair it isn’t getting as much flow. as the green.

any pics?

Here's mine.
