Hydriods on new coral and how to remove

Not sure if it would do anything with the brown hydroids.

Don't know whether it would kill them either but I'm not optomistic about that. Straight kalc paste sitting on them doesn't kill them

At any rate - you would have to have a strong dose to treat the entire tank without removing individual rocks and you wouldn't want to do that. If you remove the rock, you might as well save your money and boil the rock.

Finding something that works on the type of hydroids that grow on corals without killing the corals is a great start ;)

Here's the pic with the halides on, it browned out for the most part, but should color back up. Hydroids are definitely gone though :D I went to a few fish stores local to me and the acro's they did have did not have any hydroids, so I'll check a few more out tomorrow for testing.

So is it safe to assume that the brown variety is pretty harmless?..I have them in my system and i have seen them growing right next to acros without any noticeable damage. Any thoughts?

Here's a pic I found. Quite a few large rocks were covered like this. The hydroids never seemed to bother (sting) the corals but because the top/flower part can get so tall, it can annoy corals and almost cover them. If you have low growing corals (danae's, etc.) it can completely over them.

Eve - those are the hydroids i have..i HATE THEM!!!!!!!:uzi: :furious: :blown: i wish i could destroy them

they spread ALL OVER. they do not sting my SPS though. if they did i would have MAJOR problems. my SPS can actually push them back.

Travis had them in his 75gal (they type i have) and he found some info on them. from what i remember they are photosynthetis (the ones i have)

good luck :(

Lunchbucket - I don't sleep on them anymore - I scour the tank every evening and if I see even one - I'm on it like white on rice

Cutting off their light is one of the best ways to kill them. My best weapon is a custom-cut piece of pond liner held down by a rock. All it takes is about one week with no light and they are gone.
:)

Steve,
I just used the reef dip on my stag with the hydroids. While I can't say it was ineffective, it didn't kill off all of the hydroids and left a few very unhappy looking ones. I suspect perhaps a little stronger or longer than recommended dosage may do the trick. I may try another one at the end of the week during my next water change and see if I can't get em all.

Kurt,

Just checked mine and it looks like I still have a few on there as well, about less than 1/3 of what I had before. I'm gonna give it another dip in the next few days to see if I can't get ride all of them.

I am glad to see this is working for you as well. I was beginning to think it was some kind of fluke or chance per se.
