Has anyone had any experience with the use of hydrogen peroxide to eradicate pest algaes? I am tossing around the idea of rescaping my rock work and was considering spot treating the rock out of tank and then rinsing it before rebuilding the structure.
I've done it in the past but never a whole rock. Shouldn't be an issue just make sure you rinse well. I don't know how much you can do at once without throwing your levels all over from the dieoff.but I can say peroxide works well when its used right.
I pulled a rock with green zoas and soaked it fully in 3 percent for about 1 min rinsed in some sw and put it back in tank. Repeated same 2 days later and it's all gone zoas look perfect.
Although the rock is very clean looking now the HA is gone.
I've done it multiple times...submerged whole rocks with large amounts of HA...I do it for about 3-4 minutes in a 50/50 mix of 3% peroxide...works awesome...all algae gone within 2-3 days...I've done it with zoas attached...they are stressed for awhile but regain color after some time.
I did that when I upgraded tanks and no pest algae came back for months. Poured 3% on most of my rock and let it sit for a few minutes. Then a quick dip in old tank water and it was fine. I've also added 20 ml of peroxide to my 200 gallon system with no noticeable difference. Not sure what I was trying to accomplish there but nothing bad happened.
I'm not really concerned doing a rock or the coral being affected. I just am wondering if me doing all 45 lbs all at once will be too much. But if I'm redoing my rock work I want to do it at one time.
as others have said a 50/50 solution works wonders. I have used it multiple times in the past and have left my corals zoa colonies up to 5 min in the solution. They will look shriveled for about 3 days but will come back algae free. Good luck.
