Hydroids?

It's hard to tell from that pic. Are there tentacles coming out the top of the tubes? Is this something new you just noticed or have they been in there a while? Hydroids are a major PITA. I had a small tank that started with a few on a rock. I left it in because I didn't know any better. They spread and spread. When I broke the tank down the rocks all went in the steamer for 30 minutes before they were used again. It's the only way I've been able to get rid of them completely. I'd suggest if you think they are hydriods, or someone here verifies they are. Remove the rock and either boil it of give it a steam bath. Whatever you do don't try to pull them out with forceps or the like. This seemed to spread them in the tank I had them in.

Thanks for the info Stephen. There are tiny "tentacles" coming out from top and sides. I believe they are hydroids, they look similar to the ones I see online but much smaller. I just noticed them a week ago. The tank is only 4 months old. I guess I will try physically removing them.

Today I noticed these little guys are now growing on an extra shell I had placed in the tank for hermits. Would hydroids grow on a shell?

Absolutely. Seems to be a fairly common place for them to pop up.

I have hydroids in my tank and have been trying to get info on them; proving to be kind of difficult. There are so many species and the some of the info I found was contradictory. From what I found, the small translucent white polyp type of hydroid is nothing to be concerned about. The brownish, almost aptasia looking hydroid is bad, very bad. I haven’t learned of anything that is said to eat them.

Im still looking into ways of irradicating them; other than removing the rock. One of the rocks I have them on has some nice life on it: sponges, feather duster, mushrooms. We'll see...

i have a few rocks that have these. at first i thought nothing aboutthe lonely one i spotted. months later, i spotted a few more on various other rocks. it was too late.

i'm in the process of killing all of them no. slowly but surely.

on the small rock rubble that i can take out of the tank, i killed them (and all other life on the rocks) by soaking them in a bucket of RO/DI water overnight. they are all dead. only their silly empty tubes remain.
they have not grown back for a few weeks now. i hope this treatment killed them.

on bigger rocks that i can not remove without tearing the tank down again, i'm using a different approach; aquamend putty.
i just cover the little suckers up with the stuff, and will keep this in place for about two months, hoping that it will kill them.

anyway, just my $0.02

the ones that look like brown dandelions are the worst - they send out 'roots' that get into the rock and dont go away - i lost a whole nano to them because i wouldnt be aggressive enough in removing them

most of the other hydroids do not reproduce like the type above...(the brown ones not the green)

My hydroids are small white tubes with hail-like things growing out of them. They grow in patches on various rock and on the one shell. Aaroneous, I agree, finding info on them seems to be rather difficult.
