Hydrometer

My hydrometer broke today (during a water change) forcing me to eyeball the amount of salt I put it. It was one of those crappy floating dial hydrometers, (which I have learned from Seabay meetings to be inaccurate). I should replace it.

I've heard that refractometers are more accurate but is there any other device that would do the same job for less?

Those less expensive swing arm type hydrometers are just fine if you get someone to help you "calibrate" yours (figure out how far off your swing arm is). I don't know if any of the local LFS will do this for you, but anyone that has the more accurate refractometer can do it. Do you have a friend that has a refractometer?

The swing arm hydrometer and the refractometer are the only two kinds of salinity measurement devices that I know of.

There's a floating glass hydrometre...but I don't know where they sell them. They're supposedly accurate, but difficult to read.

Thanks. I remember a SEAbay meeting where someone brought in some reference water for calibration. Could we do this again?

Sure - I don't see why not. I will be out of town for the September meeting, but I'll pass the request on.
