Hyperactive skimmer - Help needed

I have recently returned to the hobby after a 10 year break and am really enjoying it. There have been some nice upgrades to equipment since then and there are lots of new corals out there that are very pretty and not too hard to purchase.

Three days ago I added some corals to my tank and needed to anchor them with some CA and Aquastick epoxy. 10 years ago the stuff made my skimmer over produce for about a day - it was a venturi type. Now I have a Reef Octopus SR2000 cone and its been hyperactive for THREE DAYS! I have the skimmer cup drain feeding the water right back to the sump as it would fill in less than a minute. I thought it would have calmed down by now.

Any tricks with these needle impeller skimmers?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Chris

Fresh carbon and dial the skimmer all the way back. You want to collect what is being produced and it will stop faster.

You can also do a large water change.

Welcome back!

I have a valve on my air inlet that lets me restrict the amount of air. this does the trick for me. cheap 2 dollar fix from home depot. free if youre into stealing.

I just didnt have anymore adjustment with the sump height water fixed and the outlet valve height "fixed" I don't have a valve on the air intake like I did 10 years ago with the venturi system. I have 1/2" of tea water now in the collection cup and the skimmer has calmed down quite a bit. I think I will arrange a more premanent lift for the skimmer so I have more adjustment with the outlet valve going forward. I will also look into installing a air inlet valve.

Thanks again!
