Okay here it goes. I have been fighting this since the diatoms really started. I have been searching and searching about cyano. Most older threads just say more flow, lower nutrients, ro/di water, add bacteria, check bulbs, more water changes, lights out,etc etc......I have done all that and the cyano has been getting worse creeping more and more on the corals. I did not want to do the red slime remover because most people reported that the cyano came back even stronger. So I found a thread on the two reef forum. The thread is 48 pages long I read all 48 pages and there was pictures that it actually worked. I may get flamed for doing it but there are claims that this method is not a band-aid and that it actually kills the bacteria 100%. That is still to be determined. What I am doing is dosing 3% hydrogen peroxide just the regular brown Bottle stuff. 1ml per 10gallons of water every 12 hours for 14 days. It is important that you put it in your overflow or sump if possible. (very important to read the thread!!!!!!!) So I started it I am on day 6. I started last Monday night. The first few days no change at all in the cyano and I was kinda bummed out because the hydrogen peroxide does not work on spirulina and there is no way without a microscope to tell the difference(also in the thread) so this led me to try lights out for the weekend to hopefully give the peroxide a boost and led me to another google search and found some LA reef club blog that also referenced the big thread on the other forum but he stated there won't be much change in the cyano until day 5(he had pics to prove it)which happened to be my first day of lights out. So Friday night I go down and look at the tank and just see all red balls just floating around the tank. Skimate was extremely strong smelling and much different color. So I do believe it Is working. I still see all kinds of pods crawling all over the rocks. So Monday morning I will be going all blue lights to see if it starts coming back and then I have one more week of dosing. Wednesday is waterchange day I will probably do a pretty big change to get the dying cyano out of there. Did I say read the thread? Yes before you add anything read the thread.
