I am so sick of hearing about global warming

I also love the look on peoples faces when I say chopping down trees will save the environment. They know I am right after a short explanation which burns them even more.

There is no explanation that can possibly explain how chopping down trees will save the environment. Right now they are huge carbon sinks. So unless you chop them down and replace them with new trees I dont see how your explanation works.

Given the spirit of this thread I'll type slow....

Carbon in the air causes global warming......Right?
Trees take carbon out of the air as they grow........Right?
Putting carbon in the ground reduces global warming....Right?

So chopping down trees and putting their carbon back in the ground reduces global warming......Right?

The italicized part is wrong. Taking carbon from the air and putting it into the ground should help global warming. Trees are not carbon in the air.

A nice start to reducing the greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming would be if soccer moms that could get by coomfortably with a fuel efficient mini-van would do so instead of driving mega polluters like Navigators, Suburbans and Hummers. Someone that drives to work alone could do the same.

I drive on average 110 miles a day doing my job in field service. I do so in a Hyundai Elantra that get's 25 city and 31 hwy (actual, not advertised). My car is cramped with all my tools, books, loaners, parts etc but I live with it because it is the responsible thing to do.

And to the insulting Whalediver; typing slow might be more an indication of your comprehension of the topic rather than the spirit of the discussion.

Trees, like all living things on our planet, are carbon based. This I will agree to.

Scientific study indicates deforestation is a probable contributing factor to global warming. That deforestation is a result of "progress" such as clear cutting rain forests for urbanization and for grazing land for livestock.

If you go back to the most basic study of plants in grammar school science class that trees (and all plants) absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen by removing the carbon atom as part of their respiration.

Destroying trees and burying their remains would release methane gas via decomposition. Methane gas as indicated by other scientific studies (specifically bovine flatulence) is also a contributing factor to global warming.

Our planet is ill. There are things each and every one of us can do to help delay it's death.

Folks - Even though this is your club forum it's still hosted on Reef Central by Reef Central.

That means that the rules that apply elsewhere on the board still apply here. Political discussions, name calling and generally nastiness won't be tolerated. It'd be silly to see folks get their posting privileges terminated over this.

Let's get back to reef keeping and drop this please.

I'll leave this thread with a smile some people just dont get the joke and the science of the subject.
On with the reef keeping stuff
