He is about 2", pretty small guy, but I picked him up for free, so I figured id give it a shot for him in my nano tank.....

I know most people on here say against it, because of poor feeding habits that these fish have....but I have close to 40lbs of LR in my 24g nanocube (well established) with TONS of copods and such running around for him to feed on....PLUS I fed him live brine shimp today, which he ate........

But he was free, needed a home, and they look just so cool....so I put him in my tank.....2 Clowns and and a Cardinal are his roomates...

Ill keep you guys updated on how he does.
 
I heard that its a bad idea to put a mandarin in anything less than a 50 gallon system. I hope it works out for you though... I know I'd love to have one in my nano.
 
so you dudn't really BUY a mandarin, did you? ;)

best of luck to you, mandarins are beautiful fish, i hope to be able to keep one some day.
 
It is possible for the fish to do fine in the tank. As long as it is eating prepared/frozen foods you should not have a problem with him. Just make sure you get him really nice and fat so you do not have to worry about it;)
 
and you have to remember that if he's relying too much on brine, he's not going to survive long, as they don't provide much in the way of nutrients
 
when it comes to mandarines, food source is key.

if its growing than its getting enough of the right food. if its getting skinny then its not getting enough food. tank size is nearly irrelevant.

the mandarine in my 20L has grown about 50% larger in the last 6 months.
 
nothing.


he may eat some leftover mysis or cyclopeze i feed the corals every week or two. other than that he feeds on pods, live mysis, and whatever else he finds on the rock.
 
they are not that hard to keep really i had one in my 29 gallon as i was tearing it apart ie: 5lbsLV no filter/ protein skimmer or flow in the tank had it like that for a good 3 months before i started to finish tearing it down and i found him " I had forgot about him when i was tearing it down" he was still alive. very skinny but still alive

Good luck!

They only need about a 100 gallon tank with about 150 lbs of liverock to support even one mandarin. You will never get a large pod population in a nano.

Maybe because he was starving to death:thumbsup:
 
A 55 is still to small. I have known people that have had a refuge for their 55 and it had pods but the mandarin still died. He tried getting a mandarin 3 times and all failed. I wouldn't risk it.
 
You can also buy trigger pods for like $10 a bottle and empty them into your refugium. Its the way to go if you want to keep a mandarin but dont have many pods. Just a thought. A 55gallon would work fine if you have pods even if you dont just follow the info above it will work. It just might get alittle pricey!;)

A mandarin will never live in a 55 unless you have a huge pod population. I would never do it. Waste of a fish imo.
