I finally found what was up with my corals!

For the past year my SPS corals have been dying and not doing very well. The cause of this was unknown until recently, when I had the return pump's gph lowered for about a week. The polyps on the SPS have came out fully and colors are finally starting to show.

I had about 300-350gph coming out of my Mag 7 in my 25 gallon tank. Was that way too much? (my rbtas liked it a lot)

Yah Know i'm in the same situation as you, I have a 40gallon breeder and I'm always wondering if I have to much or to little flow...

I'm knida new to the hobby and I just picked up a baby clown from Rod, and he looks like hes getting a work out in my tank....

I dont have anything extreme just 2 Rio 600's powerheads....

I dont wana steal your thread, just wanted to jump in :)

I supposed we both could experiement and reduce the flow for a while see what results we get

Maybe the the water needs to be diffused more. Corals don't like a jet of water coming at them constantly. It maybe as simple as putting a hydor rotating deflector on your powerheads.

Ugh, to much flow, to little flow...

hows a newbie like myself supposed to know how much flow to have? :)

Naperville Reef i don't think a mag7 is ENOUGH flow for SPS. i have a Mag5 and two MJ1200s plus a minijet400 that keeps the back of the tank detritus free.

but tell us what kind of tank do u have?
is it a 25 gal tank?

I agree that the flow discussion is confusing - I still don't entirely understand the purpose. Is it to move waste away from sessile corals, distribute nutrients and food to/from corals, or does it contribute to growth by creating physical force because of water movement?

I realize it's most likely a combination of all-of-the-above but what function is most important??
