I Got Attacked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe it sounded like it, but I didn't stick my hand in the tank hoping to get hit. I wondered what it would feel like, but didn't really want to find out. That would be idiotic to try and get hit by any aggressive animal, and I haven't done it. Oddball, I didn't know you got hit. Do you have a link to something on it?

I have never been hit, but whenever Phil is full,(at feeding time, I feed him from a large plastic eyedropper full of brine) he lets me know by hitting the eyedropper once. Like darold said, ya arent too impressed the first time, but you start to get impressed mighty quickly when you try yourself, and get a fraction of the results!

A thick rubber glove would lessen the blow from a small mantis species. However, it wouldn't help at all from the blow of numerous full-sized mantis....particularly a peacock. That's the reason I used feeding prongs when providing food. I have felt the vibrations come up the prong from when it got popped and I was VERY glad that it wasn't my finger.

PS...if anyone knows of any good sources for peacocks, please let me know. I have been on a waiting list for quite some time.

Nick,

I know you will end up with a mantis soon.

Added on hot water treatment,
I got a condi tentacle wrapped around my finger. Used hot water treatment (as hot as I could stand it, not boiling). The itching and swelling went away almost immediately.

Something important to note here......The hot water works on proteins from most marine poisons, and venoms....however if you are having an allergic reaction to something from the tank it might not. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction by the body. It can be fatal. If the heat doesnt alleviate symptoms quickly, GO TO THE DOCTOR.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Nick

If you know you are prone to allergic reaction you need to have some meds on hand... Most people who are allergic to bee stings have an Antihistamine injection device or pills... Wouldn't hurt to have some benadreal on hand.....take it on the way to the hospital....:D

Yah, and I saw they have this thing called Epi-pen or somehting, that as soon as you get hit ( if your allergic) take this and within minutes you'll be better. Ok, now like MaxxII said, back to the getting attacked!

My N. wennera took a jab at me once but I was wearing rubber kitchen gloves. She darted out from the burrow and whacked the gloves; fortunately, they were so large on my hands that she hit the gloves and not me, probably not trying to punch through really hard. It didn't even damage the glove but boy did I yelp. I should note she didn't seem very serious about it and appeared to be warning me away from her burrow, not trying to inflict serious damage.

Hey, for all you getting popped by mantis...if it breaks skin...watch out for secondary infections. There have been numerous cases where people have gotten little scratches and ended up with subdermal growths as large as an extra finger! It's pretty well documented here at reef central even.

Prodding around my frogspawn a couple of times with open cuts and got the #$%^ stung out of me when it touched them. Hurts like mad.

yah, luckily I rushed to wash my hands and then put an antisceptic on there as soon as it happened. I've read Dr. Cauldwell say that a guy that got an infection had to have his finger amputated! That would really suck, so everyone, wash your hands, even if you have a cut from something besides a mantis!
