I got Copper!!

Ok, update time!!!

So I am positive I know the source of the copper!!! I did a copper test on my HOT water and turns out it is loaded with copper! And when I first set up my tank I set it up using tap water from my bathtub spicket. When I did this I used luke warm water so that I could get the temp closer faster. Well I learned my lesson!! I now have an RODI unit up and running and I ONLY use cold water from it. So mystery solved. Copper is down to almost nothing in my tank and my snails are thriving again! In fact I have snail babies on the way! Some of my snails laid eggs on the glass in a few different spots.

It would be great to be able to rule out the water source. You do have to much LR but not the copper source. Could have brought rom outside sourec like the rock. Then you say you added all new water.This would cause the tank to recycle and it could be a small cycle or a large one.

huh? I am confused by your post Demonsp...are you saying you think the soure could still be the LR? And that I should do a water change? Your grammer has confused me...

I agree with Lance--it could be coming from the live rock

do you know the history of your life rock---was it every used in a qt tank where they medicated for eg

I just suggested it could be from the LR.The old owner could have dosed without knowing what he was doing. A HOB filter with carbon and a few water changes should cure that.

This is not true. It depends on the building codes where you live and the quality of home that was built. Anyway, it is not relevant. It is easy to determine what kind of pipes you have. Look.

if the live rock was used in a qt tank with a copper based medicine then chances are that rock will have to be replaced

Oh yeah I hear ya demonsp. I have done a water changout and put in a cuprisorb filter and I have the copper down to really low levels. So I think I am on the winning end of that battle now.

Going to do another water changeout later this week once I get some more salt in and then it should be getting really low.

it wasnt from a QT tank. I know that for a fact. If the old owner ever used copper based medicine they didnt do it constantly. But like I said, the water that i set up the tank with was dowsed in copper and I have since stopped using that water. I will find out soon now for sure if that was the only source. I took out the copper filter today so we will see if the copper comes back or not now.
