I got this clam from LFS.. is it okay?

So i won this clam on an online auction. When i went to pick it up, it responded to light when I raised my hand, but I couldn't get a clear look at it because it was out of my reach. I told them I wanted to look at it, and started looking around. Well, they bagged it and it shut so I couldn't see it if I wanted too. I got home, and got it in my tank, it opened pretty much right away.
That is when I saw the big hole in the mantle. I thought it was supposed to be a slit. I picked it up and you can see through the bottom into the clam too. This cannot be right... But I'm new to these.
It's a crocea clam.

It looks ok. Probably a little stressed looking at the gaping mouth but color looks good and it is a baby. Give it some time to get used to your tank. I'm sure it will close back up.

However, they do require a LOT of light and need to be mounted on your rock so that they can attach. They will release a chemical that etches into the rock and seals them in place.

If you want to be able to move them around I would recommend putting them onto a piece of LR (that you can move later if needed) if possible and place them somewhere mid level around your rock work.
In nature, they usually jump into a crevice between LR and as they grow, they etch and bury themselves into place with just their mantle sticking out. Kinda cool actually!

Again not sure why you are going around telling people that Croceas have no place in the hobby. What is your reasoning for that?

Put that crocea as high up on the rocks as you can, they aren't sand dwelling clams and definitely need to be blasted with light.

to the OP, clam looks a bit stressed out, but that's not entirely unusual with new acquisitions.

croceas are greedy, greedy, little light hogs, so my advice would be to put him as high up in your rocks, and as close to the lights, as you possibly can. my crocea is sitting about 8 inches below my AI Vegas, and if my rocks allowed it i would raise him up even higher.

the byssal opening looks just fine. if he finds a happy spot he may or my not attach.

I have one t12 acentic, and two 250 watt halide bulbs running. I have him half way up right now, and he's attached himself to the rock. is that a good sign he likes where he is?

Yes, usually if they're attached that is a good sign. If they're not attached it doesn't necessarily mean they're not happy, but if they "put down roots" so to speak it's generally a positive indicator.

Mine has been under LEDs for several years now, and is quite happy!

haha just a little friendly mh vs led trolling. In all honesty, I am still a little confused about LED lighting. Par clearly doesn't scale 1:1 and honestly, so many people enter/leave the hobby within a year of starting that I am not sure what to make of success or failures I see posted. Some seem to be using MH and LED combo. Seems like they would still be stuck with the huge disadvantages of MH in that scenario (e.g. power consumption, chiller, frequent need for bulb replacement, etc.)

This certainly isn't the thread for me to dig up the LED discussion. Croceas can indeed do great in the hobby using anything brighter than T5s.
