why does this happen?
I remember when I could pick up one easily for $35 at pasadena tropical fish a couple of years ago.

it is the same thing that acans and blue zoo's went through also.

what is with the sudden interest

From what I remember from several years ago (at least 10) they never lived long.

The one in my gallery I had for a year and a half before an RBTA fell on it and the Haddoni decided to eat it and die..I wouldn't pay more than $75.If anyone does decide to get one, make sure to get one over 4" ,any smaller and they're less likely to survive.

They are beautiful but landed my roomie in the ER on after a severe allergic reaction to it's sting.

I saw a smaller blue one at Coral Oasis a couple weeks back for $40.00 Don't know anything about their lifespan though...

A friend of mine has a geen carpet and he feeds it cocktail shrimp weekly.

Speaking of anemone stings, how bad are they normaly? Just got a RBTA and mini carpet anemone. Think I've touched them a few times and had skin irritation that resulted in slightly itchy tingly bumps for a few days. Should I be more cautious in the future? I have a tiny tank (16 inch cube) so it's hard to avoid brushing against them from time to time.

My carpet when acclimating was stuck to my hand.

It looked like I had a blue glove on. I took my hand out of the water and it took like 30 seconds of waving my hand out of the water for the anemone to let go of my hand and fall back in to the tank.

No anemone has stung me before....But Ive been bitten my a dog face puufer. It was 10 inches big.:D

Unless you're allergic to it's sting it's nothing more than an irritant.

From what the Dr. said,if you're allergic to bee stings then you are more likely to be allergic to an anemone sting(although my roomie is not allergic to bee stings and ended up in anaphylactic shock from the carpet sting)

I'd be excited except for the fact that blue is the most boring color in the world!

I'm just kidding. Blue is alright with me. But not as fantastic as purple.

Varies by anemone, of course.

I'm severely allergic to bees (sting in hand = swollen to the shoulder), my LTA doesn't have any irritating effect at all.

Cause, they haven't been available for a long time and technology has improved and gotten cheaper so more people can take care of them. This has created demand.

Back in the day, black tangs were $100. It has been a few years since I last saw these aor blue carpetsfor sale. Now that there is better husbandry, and technology, reefers feel more confident about their abilities to keep harder to find animals alive, so they are willing to shell out the bucks.

Furthermore, retail outles are now competing on a national scale, and they have better systems, so they don't have to turn the animals over so quickly. So they charge more knowing some one will pay, and if they don't, they won't die in a matter of days.

Look at the other side of the coin. It's now possible to find used MH, used quality skimmers, cheap live rock and used Starphire tanks. :D

I don't know about the sudden rage. IME, as long as you don't buy from online stores that cater to "rare" coral collectors that jack up the prices because they know somebody will pay it, the wholesale prices for the blues has actually gone down in the past couple years. The LFSs where I have seen blues recently are passing that savings on to the customer.
