I Hate My Skimmer

i have a seaclone and it clouds my tank, plus it does appear to accumulate anything. adjusting it is a pain.. i want to cut it off.

how long can i go w/ out it? will a powerhead help?

If the tank doesn't have any other circulation, you had better leave the SeaClone running, or use the powerhead to add motion to the tank. What's in the tank in the way of animals and pumps?

I hate my seaclone as well. They are difficult to adjust and impossible to maintain. there are plenty of other good alternatives. If you have much of a bioload, you may want to consider a replacement sooner or later.

bertoni, i not sure i understood your ?

i have 1 juvi clown trigger 1.5", 1 blue line trigger 2 " , 1 juvi harlequin tusk 1.5".

i don't have a sump yet. i have about 25 lbs lr. aqua clear 110.

i plan on upgrading to a 110 gallon in the next couple of weeks depending on how my $$$ is looking.

if i'm not able to upgrade, i guess i will need to buy a new skimmer. what do you think guys?

Do you have any other powerheads, etc, in the tank? The animal load is pretty light, given the size of everything. That's good.

I would probably buy a skimmer for the 110g. Depending on what skimmer you choose, you might be able to rig it onto the current tank.

i don't have any power heads. if you guys suggest it, i will purchase one asap. I always thought powerheads were for reef systems not fish only. is that wrong?

thanks for your help bertoni

Powerheads provide water movement, which provides aeration. I would be sure to have good circulation in any tank.

Seaclones are not much. I know from experiance. I made one work but it dont look like it used too thats for sure.........

I recently replaced a Seaclone that I had over the past year. Yes, it was a PITA too trying to adjust it to skim properly and not cloud up the tank. When it worked, it did it's job. Lot of nast brown crap. If you clean monthly you may find that those locking caps you tighten get worn over time and the thing begins to leak. That's why I gave it up. I recently purchase a Coralife Super Skimmer 65 (cheaper than the Seaclone) it works like a champ. I wish I would have that first.

Dont know how much you were planning on for the skimmer for the 110 but I wouldn't skip on one, would go with something like aqua c ev or asm over many other brands myself. As far as powerheads, you could pick up something like a seio 1100 for some extra flow depending on the size of your tank and it would be good supplemental flow in the 110.

I heard if you do the needlewheel mod for the Seaclone it works much better. Some ppl have just cut a bioball in 1/2 and used that as the impeller, would be worth a shot.

I had a seaclone 150 that i did the bioball mod too.... as well as replace the cheap plastic air valve with a much better brass one. I skimmed better but still not anywhere near the ASM G2 (modded) that i have now.

Seaclone was my first "you get what you pay for" experience in this hobby. I think that if you do some searching on this site you will find that your in good company for the "i bought a Seaclone and hate it club!!"

Great point Austin, would say that in general the coralife skimmer from reviews is the way to go for the beginner on a major budget.

I made the mistake of buying that myself. I since have switched to CPR backpack and very happy .
The CPR was like $10 cheaper from the place I bought it than the seaclone but way better.

$150 for a Seaclone???!!! I got a Seaclone 150 for less than $80 brand new at thatfishplace.com. I would really have felt bad if i spent 150 bills.
