I hate you green hair algae!!

Less talk, more rock!
Lol! Why won't my green hair algae go away!? Running a reactor w GFO (using Phosban and it's been set up for a little over a week), got some turbo snails, dimmed the lights, picked as much off manually as I can, got a kole tang, emerald crabs, using nopox and have done a few water changes. What else am I missing?! Phos aren't registering, but I'm sure that's cuz the GHA has it all.

I also changed my sump last week too (went from 30 tall to 20 long) and am running bare bottom w chaeto

All other chem is spot on

Tank is 60g w shallow sand bed and 60lb live rock. I have 8 fish as well. (Little much but they're all fine) I don't over feed anymore either...

Suggestions?!

Hey Greg, I could only assume your liverock contains trapped phosphates to fuel the HA growth. I would just commit to manual removal and let it run its course. Perhaps make an ATS so the algae is inclined to grow elsewhere.

Thanks I will! When I remove manually, I dipped my fingers in fresh water before going back in. Ill keep doing what I'm doing and give it time. Dunno how I feel about an ATS. Don't wanna grow the stuff but maybe lol. Thanks for the reply!

Oh, I've also raised my mag too. Gonna just give it time and let the critters munch away. Still, hate this shiz! It isn't too bad...just hate seeing it! Haha

Do yourself a favor and get a sea hair. Nothing consumes GHA like one. It's like hiring a gardener. When it has cleaned up your mess in a couple of weeks return it to the store for a credit. Even if they don't give you one the small cost of the nudi is well worth the headache of trying to manually remove. Once it's all the GHA is gone, if you are on top of your phosphate control it should not grow back.

That was gonna be my next step, thanks for confirming that!! After I go see robocop I shall get me a reef Gardner lol. Thanks for the advice!! :D

Thanks, I don't have that much it just grows in spots that are rough to get at. I get a lot on my tube anemone I don't know if the hair will go near that.

You also might read up on dosing with hydrogen peroxide. It helped a lot with my algae (although I ultimately had to remove and clean the rock with acid).

He went right to the GHA. I'll update in a couple days.

Thanks for all the help, everyone!

So not much has happened. Still there and not seeming to be eaten or going away. Not taking over the tank either soooooo I've decided I'm going to dose the tank w h2o2. (hydrogen peroxide)

I've read a lot of forums and it's supposedly a great solution and won't harm much. Not gonna dip, scrub or spot treat. Just dosing 1ml per 10g and going from there. I put my lights (ai hydra x 2) on coral acclimation mode and dimmed them by 80%. Well see what happens!!

When you dosed...how much did you do and what method did you use?! I'm going for the whole tank and dosing 1ml per 10g. Lights are dimmed as well

where are the phosphates coming from? once you figure that out it will eventually starve itself out, gfo will help as a band aid. I would check your source water and ro membrane
