I have a bit of a problem.

Mertensii is on the move. I have been keeping up with the normal water changes and carbon changes. It was in the same spot for over a year and a half. Yesterday it decided to move itself to the back of the tank and today its trying to squeeze itself through a gap in the live rock.

I was thinking about changing my light fixture a while back.I am still with the same light fixture. Probably need to change the bulbs..about due. Could the bulbs needing to be changed have caused my mertensii to move? I think it might be this, anyone else agree?

kinda looks like two mertensii's in this picture huh?

 
How old are the bulbs? I have never had any of mine (( haddonis )) move because of old bulbs, but I replace mine about every 9 months.

Did you move/clean any powerheads lately? When is the last time you cleaned your return pump? (( wondering if that has slowed down and effected the flow )).
 
um I'm a bit embarrassed about this..you clean your return pump? I have cleaned the sponge filter for the return pump but never have I took the return pump out to clean it with some vinegar. I only have one powerhead and that is my tunze wave maker. Still got the waves so thats still good. Bulbs were replaced last year, so about 10 months old(cringe)..oo..been a bit lazy with the bulb changing since I've been a new mom :p. I will be ordering new bulbs today. The RODI just got new filters four months ago...still reads 0 tds.

I do have a good amount of aptasia..could they be finally annoying my mertensii? I have been dealing with these pest for a while.
 
Im in the same boat with my lights. I have a blue haddoni which has at times climbed my glass sides when it is not happy (i.e. water and lights). My bulbs are in need of annual changing (actually over due) and I came home yesterday to find that my carpet had wondered over into my SEIO pump : (. I would say that changing the lights might make it happy and stationary again.

For sure, you should be able to be a new mom and take care of your tank -- lazy. (( just teasing :) ))
What type of return pump? I like to clean my external ones at least every 6 months, though ends up being every 9.

Honestly, it could be a combo of the pump, bulbs, and perhaps even the aptasia if they are stinging it.

If you care to find out which it is (( and not saying that you do, just from a wanting to know stand point )) you could address each issue one at a time and see what happens. Or, you could just address all of them and see if that fixes it.

I think I'll try the address all of the issues and see if that fixes it..its bad to have an anemone this large moving around.:worried: Think I will pay overnight shipping on those bulbs to get them here quick.

At least it made it though that hole. Yea, not a bad idea to get those lights soon.

I have had that issue in the past -- a large anemone moving, can cause issues for the hobbyist and the tank.
 
One thing I just thought of for ordering your bulbs..

Today is Thursday, and it is later in the day, not sure if you paid for overnight if they would come tomorrow -- might want to save the money, since they would most likely come Monday either way. I know when I order from Premium (( before noon )) I get my stuff the next day -- with normal shipping.
 
an update..I don't have the new bulbs yet but the mertensii stopped moving. Whew..I'm glad it stopped but its still in the front of the tank. Seems like it decided to get comfortable there. Looks like its trying to impersonate a haddoni. Seriously one confused Mertensii and owner :p

It may be on the move because of aptasia. On all your pictures I see some.

Did you check your chemistry? The only time my mertensiis ever moved was from dkh/alk imbalance. Are the verrucaes loosing colors? Also, they like to have their foot in deep cave, a little like E.qua in that respect.
If it stays, I would leave it alone. But if it moves again, and you've done all you could, then you may want to consider a clay pot. You could cover the clay pot with rocks so it wouldn't be an eye sore. On all my new anemones, I add them to clay pots. If I needed to move them, I just pick up the clay pot and set the pot any and there is no adjustment time for the anemone. It feels safe, and secure for them and when bothers, they could hide easily.

I don't know how the chemistry could change. I do 10% water changes weekly and some times biweekly if I forget to mix up some more salt for the next weekend. I haven't changed salt brands in years. The salinity is always checked before water changes with a refractometer 1.026. Every time I get a new bucket of red sea salt, I check the chemistry. I had one bad batch of salt where it had high PH. You don't think its because of the old light bulbs? After this bulb change I'm going to have to get a new fixture anyways. I won't be able to get 130w actinic power compact bulbs for much longer. Most online vender's have stopped selling them. All of the LFS's don't carry them, I checked :(. My fixture has 150w metal halides with 130w actinic. All bulbs are being replaced.

I think its the 10ks its under..in person you can't see those stripes at all ..there is a Tahitian butterfly in there but I know for a fact he/she haven't bothered the mertensii. The butterfly would be stupid to even try, the mertensii is very sticky. I added this butterfly after the mertensii started moving, so I know thats not the reason for its move. I added it to help remove aiptasia. Darn thing is too busy eating what I offer the tank to even touch the aiptasia. Oh well, he/she is pretty to look at.

verrucae has always been a light orange and its difficult for me to get a good picture of it. my camera is only a 5.2 mega pixel and I don't have a macro lens. This was the best picture I have ever got of its verrucae..I don't think its lighter. I have never liked how my pictures came out with the 10k's. This is one of the reasons why I haven't been taking pictures of my anemones. In the video the mertensii was under 14k metal halides. I am switching back to 14k's

Are you running carbon? And if so, when is the last time you changed it?

I personally didn't have good luck mixing my Haddoni with other anemones -- mainly an BTA and then an LTA -- so I am wondering if your carbon is old that there might be some warfare b/t your 2. `

Yep, just did a carbon change before the anemone moved. We buy a three pound bucket of carbon, just because we mix anemones. Carbon is is in the marineland 360 filter connected to the 120g.
